So am i crazy???...thought of going pro.

I'm in the process of doing this myself so here are a few pieces of advice - Spend some time working with another small brewer. By this, I mean something like 3-6 months. Our state also has a farm brewery license and as a result we have a lot of brewers starting out small - 1 to 5 bbls. They...

Worst Commercial Beer You've Ever Had?

I had a friend give me a six pack which I poured after drinking 1/2 of one. It just doesn't work as beer. It's trying too hard to be root beer. I had the same thought of "it needs to be in a float". Ice cream can fix anything! My friend then doubled down and gave me a six pack of their...

The Experimental Brewer - Recreating The Lost Beer

@motobrewer I just had a Ballantine IPA on tap. I'm in Long Island, NY. It was pretty good although the abv was a bit high. Nice malt and decent hops without being over the top. More pine/resin/orange flavor rather than grapefruit (which I'm officially tired of). Glad to see they are producing...

Another brand under A-B's Porfolio, say goodbye to Blue Point Brewing

It's in bicycling distance from my house so I'll be sad if the local community participation goes away. They hold home brewing events and have hosted local home brew clubs. It's great walking around the brewery, talking to the brewers and trying some of the more experimental batches. Having...

    What are you drinking now?

Currently drinking and IPA - an Imperial Pale Ale. I sent the wife to the store for an IPA and technically she did get one although not what I was thinking. It's a Brewers Best kit - It's in that sweet spot of the last 1/3rd of a keg so its quite good. At 8% alcohol this is the last one for...

    What are you drinking now?

I tried quite a few of the Maui beers - I really, really enjoyed the Bikini Blonde lager. I suspect it has something to do with being there.

What's the worst craft brew (commercial) you've had?

Your killing me.... Dead Guy ale is one of my favorites - especially on tap. I think you had a bad batch, bad tap line or mistreated keg. Don't let the one experience put you off. I can't see how it could be described as dull if something wasn't amiss. Ying's & wings. Nuf' said.

Does it amaze you at how many breweries are terrible at making beer?

That's ultimately it isn't it. I live on Long Island (NY) and we are blessed with good local breweries and access to craft beer in general. However every party I seem to go to the beer of choice is Bud light or Mic Ultra and most people seem more than happy with this. While that's not something...

Worst Commercial Beer You've Ever Had?

Taking it to the next level of swill - Meisterbrau "lite". Thankful everyday that they don't still make this as it was the go to beer for my in-laws back in the day. I don't know why, but this beer always seemed to have "aluminum can" as the dominant flavor.

    English IPAs

It's an awesome style and one of my favorites. Honkers ale is a nice take on the style. Hopefully they don't start messing with the recipe. +1 on Green King's IPA. I see this a lot in the US. Loved it while I was in the UK for a few years. Fullers makes a nice IPA which may make it to the US -...

Rogue Dead Guy - with an awesome pastrami on rye. Man that beer is good (although overpriced by me).

    Speidel Braumeister (brewmaster)

I'm with you on the abv's. I like bigger beers - I'll take a Belgian triple/quadruple any day - just usually not in quantities of 5 gallons. In this case I was actually going for the low end on abv. I was brewing a mild so I was looking for something around 3.0-3.5%. It's still low in alcohol...

    Speidel Braumeister (brewmaster)

87% according to iBrewmaster. I have eeked out 80% plus with a longer mash, but this was just 60 minutes so I expected more in the 75% range which is what I normally get with a larger grain bill for that amount of time. I'm still at the factory default on the mill as I've never had to change...
