    Glass carboy vs. plastic bucket

Amen to that. I'm a lot older, slower, and clumsier than I used to be ... and I was never that quick or coordinated to begin with. Glass carboys in my brewery is just asking for trouble.

    Glass carboy vs. plastic bucket

So don't scratch it. It's not at all hard to prevent scratches. Has absolutely nothing to do with money for me ... I had three glass carboys, and after breaking one (stone cold sober, btw) I gave the other two away and paid good money for PET. I'll admit I don't know everything about the...

    Glass carboy vs. plastic bucket

I'm all in with the PET Better Bottle-type plastic carboys, for both primary and the rare times that I secondary. Even being careful, I've dropped a (fortunately empty) glass carboy, and the shrapnel was scary. Nobody hurt, thankfully, but I had shards embedded 1/2" deep into the hardwood...

Yeast immobilization: magic beans of fermentation

This confuses me ... are you implying that Star San is ineffective at killing (e.g., wild) yeast? That would be news to me ... but it would also explain a lot (I'm battling a wild yeast issue). My (possibly flawed) understanding is that Star San kills through a combination of a surfactant...

How many gallons of Homebrew in 2012?

Finally got around to checking my logs; my 2012 output was 112 gal, bringing the total to 41,162.75 (I included tg123's 5-gal New Year's Eve brew, but left out DirtyOldDuck's 6-gal RIS since he didn't confirm that was 2012).

    Yeast nutrient in canned starter?

I've read (I think) all the posts on canning starter wort, but I don't think anyone's discussed yeast nutrient. Does anyone add the nutrient at canning time? Or do you typically do it when you use it for yest propagation? Or not at all?

Cost to refurb ball lock kegs

I have a lot more trouble with the poppets than the o-rings, myself.

Cost to refurb ball lock kegs

The post o-rings (2 each post, one outside and one inside) are cheap and easy. The big o-ring around the opening is a few bucks, and often won't seal without some keg lube (but this is generally readily apparent and easily rectified). The poppets are a pain. There's probably half a dozen...

Saison Boulevard Smokestack Series Tank 7 Farmhouse Ale Clone

Yep - I emailed them and they confirmed that they bottle condition with a different yeast.

    Are cooler sizes "real"?

I'm scaling up to 15 gal batches, and trying to spec out a cooler-based MLT. I'm expecting that the most I'll ever mash is about 45 lbs of grain. I've read all the volume discussions and at first blush it seems like a 100-qt cooler would be more than sufficient (mashing @ 1.25 qts water / lb...
