    Made myself an Immersion chiller

I bought a $20 aquarium pump at Wal-Mart and sealed up the connection between the pump and hose with rubberized tape. Fill my sink with ice water, drop the pump in and the "exhaust" of the immersion chiller, and I have a recirculating chiller. However: it still takes me over an hour to chill a...

    Getting FG lower

I'm doing all-grain, and using iBrewMaster (iPad app) to do the calculations.

    Getting FG lower

I have a recipe for an IPA and another for a Barleywine. I both cases, comparing recipes to BJCP, I'm in good shape, except both FGs are too high. What general techniques can I do that will bring the number down?

    IPA Grain Bill

I have been thinking about doing a second run for this as well. Is there anyway to predict what I'll get as far as gravity? I'm thinking about making the second run something like an APA. Other styles work well to reuse the same grain bill?

    IPA Grain Bill

I love all the suggestions. I'm tweaking my recipe today to make some of these changes. I'm already planning on a starter, pitching two vials of WLP001 probably on Thursday to be ready for a brew day Sunday. Dry hopping has come up a couple times before - what is that? How do you do it? The...

    Best music to brew to?

You have quite a eclectic taste in music. Your iPod probably rivals mine in the number of esoteric pieces of music that nobody but a geek would listen to. :-)

    IPA Grain Bill

I'm doing a typical 5-gallon batch, so I'm shooting for 6.5 total gallons out of the Mash. Also using a total of 6 oz of hops and what could best be described as a s***load of yeast. Haha Predicted OG is around 1.136. My last 3 batches were all session beers, with the OG/FG landing right on the...

    Best music to brew to?

Personally, i love listening to Podcasts from the Brewing Network. When I'm doing a weekend brew day, I usually listen to their Sunday Sessions. During the week, on a Snow Day-Brew Day (I'm a teacher in the northeast), I like the Jamil Show to listen to how to brew correct-to-style.

    IPA Grain Bill

I'm going to do an IPA next weekend. My original recipe was going to use 22 lbs of 2-Row (plus 2lbs Cara-Pils and .5lbs Special B). I'm thinking about going with Maris Otter rather than the 2-Row, and paring back the Special B to .25 lbs. Any thoughts?

    phoenix water profile 5-6-2008

My thought on the water is, you're going to boil the water, anyway. Cleaning any kind of water is usually as simple as boiling it, so in the end, boiling the tap vs using bottled is really going to give you the same end result. I've been brewing for two years and have only used tap water (in...

Big beers, 10 gal mash tun

I started doing all-grain brewing about a month ago. I've done six batches and they've all come out pretty well. I want to do an IPA or Barleywine next, so I'm looking at really doing a big batch. My Mash Tun is a 10 gallon Rubbermaid cooler. The IPA recipe I have is 22 lbs in the grain bill...
