    honey nut brown ale

My understanding is that all/most of the sugars from the honey ferment-out, so it doesn't really add any sweetness to the beer, though you should retain some of the other flavors/properties from the honey as long as you add it in the right point in the boil (I think some argue that you can even...

    honey nut brown ale

3rdwdr - Thanks for the recipe! I brewed this with my buddy earlier today and ended up getting a higher gravity reading - about 1.068. Do you know what efficiency this recipe assumes? If closer to 70%, i think that would explain the difference, as I think we hit somewhere in the high 70's...

    Long time, First time.

Hey everyone! I've been lurking for years, and posting for a few weeks so it is probably time that I officially introduce myself. My name is Justin - i'm from Eastern PA and started brewing while I was going to Muhlenberg College up in Allentown. For those keeping track, that's where Sam...

Brewed my first all grain batch today!

Nice! I had a similar experience last weekend on my first...fermentation finally slowed after 3 days of some serious bubbling. Somehow we overshot our target gravity (1.052) and ended up at 1.059. Cheers! Glad to see some other transition success stories!

    first AG batch

Nice! I posted something similar yesterday as well...felt good to get the first batch of all-grain under our belts. It isn't as hard as it first seems when reading through the plethora of information/methods online. Our day took about 4-4.25 hours...but I work with a roommate so having 4...

    First All-Grain Recap

Thanks! I just looked up that recipe...sounds like a good option. I think we're going to try brewing again next weekend to refine our technique a bit.

Thoughts on a random hop IPA

I was having the same exact conversation with my brew buddy last night...we have random amounts of warrior, magnum, simcoe, amarillo, and perle in the freezer and were trying to figure out what to brew next weekend to use some of them up.

A little help finding fryer to move to AG

Amazon has both the Bayou Classic SQ14 and SP10 (both $50)...however I opted for the SP10 which is similar, but circular and gets up to 184,000BTU. It's pretty bad*ss...got my 7 gallons of wort up to a boil in no time! Not sure if it would hold a keggle due to the circular shape, but fits my...

    First All-Grain Recap

After a few weeks of MLT construction and purchasing some new equipment, I decided to brew my first all-grain recipe today (Sierra Nevada Pale Ale clone). I did a ton of reading/research ahead-of-time, but as everyone knows, experience is the only way to learn. Overall i'm pleased with the...

    1st All-Grain - Disaster?

Yeah this is a tough one...sounds like people have done it before without ill effect, but there is always the potential for a freak accident. Go with your gut...if you don't dump it, just be sure to be super careful not to stir things up when moving your fermenter before racking...you might...

    Siphoning with air in tube?

Also - the testing was done with cold water...so i'll have to keep an eye on it at high temp. I'm going to give that a shot...otherwise the only thing I could think of is buying a super-thin file, which is the more expensive option. This is interesting - i'm going to give it a shot. I was...

    Siphoning with air in tube?

After making fun of myself for being vague in my title, I didn't do the best job of being careful with my nomenclature. 'The pipe' in my question should've been 'the tube' leading from my ball valve to the kettle. That's the only area where i'm sure there is air once I start draining, since I...

    Siphoning with air in tube?

So undoubtedly that title didn't explain my question very well, so let me try again: I recently built a MLT out of a 48 qt. cooler - i'll spare you all of the details, but on the outside there is a 1/2" ball valve. I bought a 1/2"to1/2" barb to connect a 5/8" hose to the 1/2" valve. One...

    Cooler Tun Manifold Position

Interesting. I don't have access to a torch at the moment but that's great to know I have the option if it comes down to it. Thanks for the tip! I'm actually starting to have bigger problems rigging up the ball valve/cpvc connection...the inner-wall is super flimsy and none of the cpvc male...

Drying tubing and other tubular items

I like to see if I can give the cat a quick shower with the water coming out of the tubes. Bringing new meaning to 'brewhouse efficiency'.

It makes a REALLY cool sound when you do this. :rockin:

    Cooler Tun Manifold Position

Hi everyone - I've been doing a ton of reading about converting a cooler into a Mash Tun...I decided to go with a CPVC manifold over copper. Either way, the hole in my old-school green metal coleman cooler is about .5 inches off the bottom of the cooler, presenting a challenge since there is...
