Pitching a RIS on a cake

So I wanted to report on the results, as they were pretty interesting. So I made a Pliny clone, and bottled it after 2 weeks in primary. I went ahead and made the Old Rasputin clone the same day I bottled and threw it on the Pliny yeast cake. Old Tex had me worried, but I decided to do it...

Pitching a RIS on a cake

I wasn't quite clear on the timing, I realize the RIS won't be ready, but I'm rushing the IPA a bit. The IPA will be in the primary 2 weeks when I brew the RIS, so I was wondering if it would help if I put half the yeast cake in the secondary for a week, then bottle. I would probably dry hop...

Pitching a RIS on a cake

I haven't brewed all summer, so I'm a bit anxious to get some beer bottled. I've got a Pliny like IPA that will be 2 weeks in the fermenter next weekend. I'd like to make a RIS and just pitch it on the cake, which I've never done, and hear that it is always considered over pitching. I'd...

    Pumpkin beer overcarbed

Since it was a pumpkin, I used brown sugar, and packed it in the measuring cup. No rings in the bottles, and only some spice debris in the bottom. Sanitation has never been an issue. Fg was 1.011 , and it tastes exactly like I was hoping. Only getting 10 ounces out of 22 sucks.

    Pumpkin beer overcarbed

Got a bunch of gushers. Made a pumpkin porter based on the Black Butte recipe, tastes great, going to be a shame if I lose it all. While racking to the priming bucket, that I had already added priming sugar to, I got distracted and dumped half a gallon on the floor. So I know I'm not...

Mac & Jack African Amber - Mao's Red Hat Amber

Mine blew the fermenter lid clean off, the airlock got plugged. So I put a hose from the lid to a jar so it could blow foam out. I usually only need to for high gravity beers. Good luck with your brew!

Topping off an all grain batch questions???

I just did my third ag, and I've had to top off all 3. I'm trying to do full boils, but apparently having more boiloff than Beersmith thinks. My deadspace calc is good so I'm just going to keep bumping the boiloff % til I'm good. I keep a pretty vigorous boil going, so that's probably it.

Mac & Jack African Amber - Mao's Red Hat Amber

I'm curious, what yeast did you use? I brewed this recipe this weekend as well, and had to put the blow off hose on. Used wyeast 1335 british ale. Must be the yeast, not a huge grainbill. I usually only have this problem with barleywines, maybe I got the fermenter a tad too full.

    First batch with washed yeast

It's percolating away right now! Washed the yeast (W 1056) from my first AG batch exactly per the sticky. It was a Pliny clone, so ton's of hops, but the washing seemed to take care of most of the hop smell. Made a 1.5L starter Friday afternoon, brewed up a 6 gallon Black Butte clone on...

Finer crush vs. coarser crush/ higher speed vs. lower speed

I just bought a Barley Crusher, used it last week, cranked it by hand, got a nice looking crush, but ended up with 60% efficiency. Fast forward to this week, 2nd batch, used a corded drill, my battery powered one was too weak, crushed it very fast, drill only has one speed, superfast...

1st AG - Mistakes and Expectations

Just bottled after only 10 days, 7 in primary, 3 in secondary, couldn't wait. FG of 1.008 after starting at 1.056. This 1st AG batch is the best beer I've ever made! Granted it's hoppy as hell like I like, but not too bitter, it's almost perfect without carbonation, I'm hoping carbing and...

1st AG - Mistakes and Expectations

I think I just figured out why I missed my gravity so much, and it wasn't all mash temp related. I plugged 5 gallons into beersmith, but I put 6 gallons in the plastic fermenter, so I could get 5.5 in the secondary carboy, which gives me a good 5 gallons to bottle. I always use a lot of hops...

    Barleywine?

I have found that you can make a very nice Barleywine using extract only. It's similar in profile to my local micro's offering; and it doesn't need that much aging to be good. It's strong, but not overpoweringly alcoholic. It's basically Walt's from the Brewmasters Bible with a little more...

1st AG - Mistakes and Expectations

Thanks Yooper, there's definitely a lot of finess to this process that no matter what all you read, the devil's in the details.

1st AG - Mistakes and Expectations

Did my first 5 g. AG batch yesterday after 15 years of piddling around with 3 - 5 partial mash batches per year. Thanks to all the info on here, it went pretty smooth, with the exception of missing my gravities and having to add water back to the fermentor after the 90 minute boil. I need a...

    Reel Ales 10^2 Barleywine!

Yeah, glad they started bottling it, been having it whenever on tap at the Fishbowl. It was their 10th anniversary beer. I think of it more as a winter warmer than a true Barleywine, but it's got the goods to be called a BW.

    Olympia WA Group Buy

I would take: Grain 1 bag Great Western 2 Row 1 bag NW Pale Ale Hops: 1lb Magnum 1lb Nugget If possible 1 lb. Chinook, although I see it's out. Thanks for doing this!
