    Another yeast starter question.

For 5 gallon batches I have been having great success with a starter recipe of 4 cups H2O, 1 cup ELDME, and one White Labs vial. I am thinking of trying out a 10 gallon batch on my next brew. My starter flask won't hold 8 cups of water. Is there any reason I can't make a starter as normal...

    No yeast activity...HELP!!!

You have a lot of time before you should start to worry. Did you make a starter by any chance? Are the temps consistently at 66 or do they drop at night?

    My new gravity frame

It's not the rattling that I'd be concerned with; it is the DMS that is dripping back into your beer. You should never boil with a lid fully or partially on.

    My new gravity frame

But you won't have a lid on it during the actual boil.

    My new gravity frame

I've got a general question for people using these upright type stands. Isn't there danger that the evaporating wort will do nasty things to the top burner? Among the nasty things that I can think of are corrosion or condensing and then dripping back into the boil kettle with all sorts of...

    Jamil Z's Oatmeal Stout

Good point. I was surprised at how clear this thing looked from the get go. Racking to the primary looked like it had been sitting in a secondary for a month. You live and you learn.

    Jamil Z's Oatmeal Stout

Could the heavy dose of irish moss be the culprit?

    Jamil Z's Oatmeal Stout

I'll give that a listen. There is no extract in that recipe. It's all grain.

    Jamil Z's Oatmeal Stout

I brewed up a batch of Jamil Z's Quaker Oatmeal Stout. This stuff tastes and looks delicious. The one issue I have is that it has zero head retention. Halfway through the glass there isn't a single bubble on the surface. The carbonation seems fine (force carbed). Is there anything about the...

    Is this good?

I've never had an issue with a stuck fermentation so I can't help much. I'd give the yeast a good swirl, make sure the temps stay where they are (don't drop at night), and wait a few days.

    Is this good?

No. This isn't the right thing to do. The time to do dilution is prior to fermentation. If you wanted to hit the expected OG right on the button you would have needed to dilute with 0.4 gal not 1 gal. I wouldn't suggest doing it since you were probably close enough on the gravity. Your...

    Better bottle blowoff tube?

Put the blowoff vessel on the floor if you do. It's not likely, but you could get a siphon going and find the water from your vessel in your beer.

Best couple of bucks I ever spent.

    My Oatmeal Stout

Damn does it taste good. A little more time on the gas and that head should be a good inch.

What should I make with these hops?

Cool...thanks. It would be very nice if the database here at a similar function.

What should I make with these hops?

American Pale Ale Bee Cave Brewery Haus Pale Ale

Just brewed up a batch of this bad boy. Have people found they needed a blowoff tube? Mine is pretty cruddy and I'd rather not use it or make a run to the LHBS if I don't have to. I've got about 5.25 gals in an ale pale and plan to ferment at 67F or so. ETA: I didn't rehydrate the yeast. I...

    Rice Hulls Questions

Don't worry. I'm sure I'll drop an open bottle of iodophor or something into my mash and come asking how to "cope" with that problem. ;)
