    Porter Recipe...Too hoppy??

I found this recipe, bought the ingredients without thinking and now I am questioning the recipe. This seems like an awful lot of hops. Sanity check please. Recipe: 7 lbs amber malt extract 1 lb black patent malt .5 lb chocolate malt .5 lb crystal malt, 60L 2 oz willamette at 50...

    My IPA Restarted

I brewed an IPA about 9 days ago. I was going to transfer to the secondary on day 7 when I noticed that fermentation restarted. I am guessing that when the basement cooled a bit, the yeast woke up and finished their job. So, since ferementation restarted, how long can I leave the brew on...

    Keg Problem

Replaced the poppet with one from another keg. Pressure tested. No leaks. Carbing naturally. Total time: 1 minute. Brewed a Porter last night. Changed the poppet while I was waiting for my Porter to (slowly) cool. Chiller is my next purchase/project. Thanks for the advice.

    Keg Problem

So I have kegged for the first time. I added 1/3 cup sugar, purged with CO2, and set the keg aside to carb up naturally. This was Friday (27 July). It seems I've got a problem now. The liquid side outlet can't hold the pressure and is leaking a little (and by little, I mean very little but...

    Stupid Question...CO2 Tanks

This is one advantage. The guy said it takes as long as it takes him to write the reciept. Price seems reasonable at $22 And good point above...no hydrotest. I think for the convience of it, swapping is my answer. Thanks all for the replies.

    Stupid Question...CO2 Tanks

So I am going to keg my batch of APA. It's ready to move from secondary to the keg... I have all the parts and built my kegerator. Now I just need gas. The local gas supplier says they exchange tanks...they do not fill the specific tank that I bought/bring in. Do I care? A tank is a...

    Rant from Mississippi!!!

This is the article explaining Montgomery County's (MD) process. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/03/12/AR2007031201341.html Interesting read. Luckily, we have DC and VA close by. Plus 2 homebrew stores (in Columbia and Frederick) so the situation is only...

    brewers best kit

Yep. I actually just bottled this exact brew last night. 1 week in primary, 2 weeks (actually 17 days but who's counting) in secondary, and 3 weeks before I drink. Not really a huge fan of the wheat beers but this was a good brew last night...even though it's still 3 weeks shy of "ready."

    Rant from Mississippi!!!

I feel your pain. Here in Montgomery County, Maryland, the county runs the beer/liquour stores. Because of that, we get absolutely no variety. Granted, Virginia is a short drive away and they let everything in.

    1st Batch

Congratulations and welcome. This hobby will suck you in. Before others say it, the general rule is 1-2-3...1 week in primary, 2 in secondary, and 3 in the bottles. Keeping that in mind, the taste will continue to improve for a few more weeks so be patient. Its hard to do. I have been...

    Dogfish Head 60 Minute IPA...

The 60 minute is great stuff. In fact, while collecting bottles, I bought 3 cases (not all at the same time) of the 60. And the labels come off pretty easy to boot. 60 is my favorite "pale" beer. Can't call it my favorite beer as that would offend Sir Arthur Guinness. How about we call...

    I'm sorry, but come ON!

It's comments like this that are most frightening and very short sighted. The fact that you believe this is true is scary. And before you argue, remember that it was Bush who sent them there in the first place unprepared, underfunded, and without a plan whatsoever. Can you even imagine...

    The "never again" syndrome

Southern Comfort. Freshman year of college I had a few shots. Then I spent a lot of time regretting it while sitting on the bathroom floor. That was 12 years ago. A few years later, I was no less then 10 feet away from some SoCo and felt the rumble. I am sure the same would be true today...

    Aging the Beer

Thanks all for the information/opinions. Figured I would get "wait 6 weeks no matter what" responses. First batch was difficult to wait on...this is why I want 3 beers in rotation at some stage. Next batch gets secondary. Patience is a virtue but I like beer.

    Aging the Beer

My first batch was (actually still is but only a few left) a German Oktoberfest. Primary straight to the bottle; about a week in primary, 3 weeks in the bottle before I cracked the first one open. Damn good if I don't say so myself. I am using Brewer's Best extract kits for now to get the...

I'll look into it. Thanks for the tip.

    First Timer with a Question

Thanks all for the responses. It sounds like the only problem will be lower alcohol content so not realy a bad thing for my first batch. I did correct for temperture so that's not it. I did stir again for a few minutes before pitching the yeast so I should have enough oxygen in the...

    First Timer with a Question

So I brewed for the first time today. When it came time to take the initial specific gravity reading, the reading came out off...1.035. The kit calls for 1.052-1.055. It's a German Oktoberfest kit. Is this bad? What did I do wrong?
