    Doubling a recipe?

I recenty acquired a keggle that I plan on using for a double batch this weekend. I took one of my regular 5 gallon recipes and used my brewing software to double/tweak the grain bill, readjusted the hop schedule, etc... The one thing that's really giving me issues is the mash schedule. I...

    Giant massive fail!

Brewed a Nut Brown a couple weekends ago. Was intended to be a sessionable beer with an OG of 1.049. My thermometer was somehow WAY off during the mash...LIKE 20 DEGREES OFF!!... so instead of mashing at 154, I was probably mashing at about 174...OG ended up at about 1.041 toward the end of the...

    how to pitch lacto starter?

I've had a homemade lacto starter going for a couple weeks now and I'll be pitching into a Berliner Weisse tomorrow...my question is HOW to pitch it? I've searched for a thread and can't find one. Should I strain the liquid from the crushed grains and pitch that? Recommendations welcome...

    Accidental Perfection!!

I brewed an extract beer a while back using honey and rye and it was pretty tasty...well, been brewing AG for about a year now, so thought I'd convert this old solid recipe to AG...brewed it mid-february or so...I'm drinking it right now...and I have to say...this tastes EXACTLY like...

mash/sparge temps - check my math please

I am consistently losing anwhere from 3-5 during my mash and I'm working on that...but I'm also missing my sparge temps by roughly the same amount (I batch sparge). Would it make sense to add the amount that I lose during my mash to the temp of my sparge water in order to hit my target temp?

    off taste from kegged beers

I posted a thread describing this issue before, but couldn't pinpoint which part of my process was causing the issue. So the suggestions I received didn't end up resolving the issue. After reading some threads describing a similar off taste, I think I've narrowed it down to my kegging system...

Brewing in the elements, is there anything better??

Sitting here in the garage, looking out at a few lingering flakes hit the ground - been snowing for most of the day here in Pittsburgh. Sipping on a Barleywine. Listening to some tunes. And brewing a Spiced Nut Brown. I've got a couple layers on and every time I get splashed with water I...

Stuck sparge fixed - how bad is it?

So only my second stuck sparge, but decided to power through this time. I transferred everything from the MLT into a bucket and fixed my manifold which had come unattached - CPVC with slots. Poured the contents of the bucket back into the MLT, let it sit for about 10 mins to settle the grain bed...

    Long boring thread...I have issues

Sorry for the long post ahead, but I need help. I'm a neurotic homebrewer with a problem. I've posted other threads about this problem, but thought if I posted my entire process in detail, someone might be bored enough to read it and figure out what I'm doing wrong. The problem: Any...

    Problems with SG readings

I got a refractometer for Christmas. Was so excited to use it that I calibrated with a bit of bottled water and used it on my first brew day the next day - 12/26. Brewed an Imperial India Brown Ale AG recipe...projected OG was 1.073 and ended up at about 1.076 using the refractometer. Had a...

Ever blend your homebrew with craft beer?

I brewed a pretty tasty chocolate coconut stout...but I'm getting bored with it and the keg just won't kick...so I've started blending it with other beers in my fridge that I'm not overly fond of. For example...have about a six pack left of Magic Hat Howl. Drank a ton of it last year while...

    random experimental brewday

About a month ago I tried to overstep my capabilities and brew a huge RIS...long story short, my mash tun couldn't handle the poundage and ended up with the worlds worst stuck sparge...could only manage about 1 gallon of runnings. I was SOOOO disgusted with myself...but somehow managed to be...

got an extract kit as a gift...should I modify?

My wife has a half sister who lives out in Oregon. She knows I'm a homebrewer and avid craft beer drinker. Every once in a while, she randomly sends us gifts. Well this time it was an extract kit directly from Rogue for their Oatmeal Stout - super nice gesture, very thoughtful. I think it's an...

    Did chocolate stall my fermentation?

I just got finished racking my stout to secondary on top of some roasted coconut. It was in the primary for 2 weeks and the airlock had stopped bubbling easily within the first week. I know I should have taken the reading before racking to secondary, but I haven't had any stuck ferm issues yet...

what size starter for bottle harvested yeast?

I saved a bottle culture of yeast from an Ommegang Aphrodite 750 mL bottle. Was wondering what size starter to use to get it going...don't want to "over-feed"

First two AG beers seem to be acidic/bitter...

My first two all-grain attempts seem to be overly bitter. Very thick, very syrupy astringent, bitter taste in both. Not a pleasant bitter either...mind you I drink plenty of IPAs with high IBUs... The first all-grain beer was a "pale" ale that ended up giving me insane heartburn...and now I'm...

My wife has been asking me to make her a Coconut Cream Stout ever since we had one at a beerfest a couple months back. I finally feel like I can start brewing darker beers, so I started working on a recipe for her...any advice would be fantastic...thanks! Fermentables: Pale Malt (2 Row) US...

    "Apprenticeship" at Full Pint!!

I went out to visit some of the guys that I had been communicating with at Full Pint Brewery in Pgh today (http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/22854). Hung out with Jake while he finished up a batch, talked about a few things and promptly agreed to come out and help him brew this Monday. SOOOO...

In the middle of my brew day and I've already had to use my back up propane tank, my back up thermometer and my backup mash paddle. Sheesh.
