Questions about my first "big" beer

I have never used a liquid yeast as of yet, but a big beer if your yeast is not good and ready might be overwhelmed. No real advise here, but stick it out and check the GRAV in a few and see were you fall. I wouldn't recomend messing with beano to jump start it or bring it sown, you'll wati...

    how is your weather???????

sun just broke and wind is down to 10 or so, just putting in last hop addition. I also just picked up 3 hop plants from a guy here in town already a few feet long. Any advise on planting already started hop plants. They are cascades too, my favorite. gotta go drop some...

    how is your weather???????

Just started the boil and my beautiful brew day turned into a severe 50 mph+ wind and rain storm. Sure wish I had a garage. Currently Pouring, just added my first hop addition. Burner is running at full just to keep kettle boiling. I'll post pics later. I guess it is [I]thunder head[I]...

    Sad, Sad night for me!

Push through baby , push through..... Let it go and tell people it is experimental and all the "big Micros" are trying it. and by the way, I was showing off my rasp, honey wheat, and taking a sample, the damn thing smelled like hot dog water. I even boiled hot dogs to double check...

anyone used a "ice barrel" aka roll around cold pop display

Other than testing it, I don't know how I would tell. Any ideas?

    Are you a Hop Head?

IBU's are bitterness units not so much aroma, flavor units. You can have a low IBU with a lot of hop aroma and flavor. My last IPA I shot in around 48 IBUS for the boil, but I added 1 oz at flameout, then filtered wort through 1 oz, then dryhopped 2 oz for 7 days, then 1 oz in priming sugar...

anyone used a "ice barrel" aka roll around cold pop display

I have a ice barrel that I was thinking about converting to a mash tun. It is 18" x 1.5' deep and has a drain in the center. Currently I am using a cooler tun, but dwould like something round to improve efficiency. If you have seen one of these, probably in a grocerystore or gas...

Too hoppy. Can it be corrected?

I don't know if a beer could be too hoppy for me. I'd bottle and celler, and save for your hop loving friends. That would free you up to do some more home brew. Good luck

    krausening priming method

The specific gravity you mention is the sp grav of the gyle not the beer, I believe. Good luck, basically you are substituting dme already in solution instead of powder.

First big beer attempt, wanting some advice

I have read, not partook, that when making a big beer you can Add the Wort over a long period so as not to poop out the yeast. You pitch your starter into 1/2 of the batch and as soon as the ferment slows you add another 1-2 qts of wort(week or 2), then repeat until it is all finished up...

    amylase enzyme... A.k.a... beano

I added beano, probably first and last time, to my rasp honey wheat. I mashed at 152 after protein rest and my fg still stood around 23. I put in 2 tabs smashed, how long am I going to have to wait now? I am checkin gravity today, we'll see where it is. I was shooting for 09 or 10 FG, Is...

    Raspberry Ale?

Did you heat them above 140 for at least 10 min. Frozen berries are not sanitized just cleaned. Next time just drop them into 1/2 qt or so of boiliing water and let them set for 20 min or so before putting them into secondary. Good luck sounds like it will be good.

    Dry hoping/filtering question

Has anyone else seeped hops in their bottleing primer. I tried on my last IPA and it gave it great flavor. I boiled my sugar in 1/2 qt of h20 and added my hops in a paint bag for 10 or 15 minutes (didn't write it down) then transferred and bottled. Cascades all the way baby (actually It was...

    All cascade?

ok my latest IPA and voted in top five of IPA lovers I have shared with. Here is a basic recipe. 10 # pale grain 2# crystal 20 mashed at 152 for 60 min ( I would next batch mash at 158 and let cool in the 60 min to 150 hops: 1 oz 60, 1 oz 30, 1 oz flameout filtered through 1/2 whole...

Things I have learned in last brews

No kidding on the hot to the hand part.... just tasted the batch though... hm hm good. Although 8.5% (if my calcs are right) is a little beefy. I gave a sixer to my brother and called it old age ale... knocks your socks off and some panties too. (or boxers for the female persuasion). I...

    new "big"boy carboy

They are surprisingly light considering (empty) I am thinking of a handtruck style dolly that they mount in, all cushioned etc. balloon tire type. That is also why I bought the pump. So if needed less moving around. so ten it is yeah :rockin:

    Oxidised Brew

I didn't see anything about temps. if you mash really low (like my first attempt) you can get that off flavor. Did you final gravity come out low?
