I could really use one of these!

    Conversion to Partial Mash

So say I've done the math and figured out that I want to mash 5 pounds of base malt along with my specialty grains, with 5.25 lbs of extract making up the rest. If I'm doing a 3-gallon partial boil of the wort resulting from my partial mash, should I add any of the extract at the start of the...

    Stubborn deposits/stains on glass carboy

I'm in that situation - was gifted a carboy from a friend that had been used for making wine, and had some trouble getting those decades-old wine stains out. Did vinegar and then StarSan, along with a brush and some straight-up soap, and wasn't able to be sure I got everything off. And it's had...

New science fiction story about homebrewing in space

Just got the new (May 2011) issue of Analog magazine, and discovered that one of the new short stories in it, "The Old Man's Best" by Bud Sparhawk, is pretty much all about homebrewing. In it, two working stiffs on a station in Jupiter orbit, missing one comfort of home in particular, have a go...

    Foamy Wort Going Into Fermenter

Just had the same situation tonight, and I'm glad to hear that the foam's not a problem. There was one small problem though - all that foam made it darn near impossible to get an OG reading off my hydrometer. It almost disappeared under all the foam.

    Thermometer question

Thanks, AC! It took a bit of trial and error before I found a tool that the thermometer didn't swing around freely on, but once I did (a potato masher, believe it or not) it works like a charm. :mug: (commonsenseman: I haven't tried it with actual liquid in the pot yet, I hope mine does the...

    Thermometer question

Okay, this might be a dumb question with a obvious answer that's just eluding me, but I was a good noob, did several searches and couldn't find an answer: After doing a few 1-gallon kit brews, I just bought the gear for my first full 5-gallon from-a-recipe brew. Among the equipment I bought...

The stupidest comment on your beer

My mother-in-law insisted on trying some of my English Brown Ale. Then upon tasting it: "You know what? Tastes just like Ballantine!" And she meant it as a compliment.

from one noob to all other noobs

Just had the same experience with the opening of my first HB about 20 minutes ago, slomo, so I'm raising my glass and seconding your RDWHAHB! :mug:

Hi! First-timer down the Jersey Shore

Well, the month was full of typical noob fears - "where's the krausen?" "why is my airlock so still?" "oh crap I touched the wort!" etc. - but I listened to the wise ones here at HBT, whose advice boiled down to "be patient, never dump a brew, whatever you think you did you probably didn't ruin...

New brewer from NJ (don't immediately hate me!)

Good to see another new Jerseyite! The Brewer's Apprentice is my LHBS too (although I've only been there once, 'cause I just started brewing last weekend!) Good luck with your brews!

Hi! First-timer down the Jersey Shore

Hello HBT! After more than a year of thinking & reading about homebrewing, these small kits (from Brooklyn Brew Shop) turned up in the Whole Foods Market I live next to. That was all the sign I needed that the time had come to take the plunge, so I bought one (Chestnut Brown Ale) and went to it...
