Do I really have to clean new bottles?

Dude---rinse and then sanitize them or do like I do and rinse them out and set them facing down in the dishwasher and run it on the sanitize (heated drying) cycle w/o any detergent. All good.

How to get into 10 gallon batches

You could go aluminum pretty cheaply. Maybe something like this- http://www.ebay.com/itm/80-QT-COOKING-POT-W-STRAINER-/140608790095?_trksid=p4340.m185&_trkparms=algo%3DSIC.NPJS%26its%3DI%26itu%3DUA%26otn%3D5%26pmod%3D140584899599%26ps%3D63%26clkid%3D3034376201027626229

    Hops

If you like variety Farmhouse is definitely the way to go. I like their Bitter Bunch special. 1/4# of each Apollo, Bravo, Galena, and Summitt for 9.99------pretty hard to beat that. I just ordered some yesterday.

Ok. Thanks Bob. Glad to know my b.s. meter works at least some of the time!

    baking bread with beer yeast

Just from my experience in using beer yeast slurry for bread making, I would use about 4 times the amount of slurry to sub. for dry bread yeast. (i.e if your recipe calls for 1 tablespoon of dry baker's yeast use about 4 tablespoons of "yeast cake" out of your fermenter.) If your yeast cake is...

    flip top bottles

Yep---that a good deal. You can also save champagne bottles. You've got to buy different crown caps to fit them or you can buy swing tops to add to them. Someone posted this link a couple of weeks ago. http://www.ebay.com/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180642989446

Anyone know of a good HBS in St. Louis MO?

Lukas' Liquors rocks! I gotta tell ya, I'm from Florida and we don't even have a store that comes close to Lukas' for selection and price. Every time I visit St. Louis, a trip to Lukas' is on the agenda to stock up on micros.

Ginger Ale - what to do now?

Here's the recipe that I brew. It is for 5 gallons though. Ingredients: 1 &1/2 pounds ginger root (scrubbed of dirt chopped roughly/ about 3/8 to 1/2 inch cubes, skin on) 4 large lemons (sliced thinly, peel on, don't worry about the seeds) 2 limes (sliced like the lemons) 1 teaspoon...

10 BIAB Batch in 10.5 Gallon kettle?

Sure you can. You might want to consider a couple of things though. With 18lbs of grain after you pull your bag, the grain will have absorbed almost 2 gallons of your starting liquid. I would do a 2nd pot sparge of your grains and top off your brewkettle with this liquid to around 9 gallons...

light or dark brown sugar for priming?

At 2/3 of a cup of white cane sugar per 5 gallon batch for priming-trust me--it's not gonna taste cidery. That's all I use and I'll be damned if I can tell the difference from corn sugar (or DME for that matter, except that DME leaves a krausen ring in the neck of your bottles, which is one...

Just did the biab 2row SMaSH

Skrimpy----so I just gotta ask--saw your post on treasurenet.com the other day. Did you really post a message on a treasure site about this two-row SMaSH just for the heck of it? Or did you have too many homebrews that night and think that you were posting it here on HBT or maybe Tastybrew...

How Much Money Is There To Be Saved?

One can definitely make all grain light alcohol beers (like bitters, milds, light blond ales) for around $7.00/case. I know. I'm unemployed and as they say necessity is the mother of invention.

Alcoholic Ginger Beer - input request

Guys I make ginger beer also but have never tried the ginger beer plant. I use wine yeast and bottle in 2L soda bottles. No pasteurization is necessary this way. The recipe if anyone is interested is as follows: Here it is not in any format. For a 5 U.S. gallon batch------ Ingredients...

    Table Sugar vs Corn?

Dondlelinger----your math is faulty. Your 20% max figure is calculated using the percentage of fermentables in your beer recipe. I.E. If you have 8lbs of grain and/or malt extract and 2lbs sugar for a total of 10lbs fermentables then you are at your 20% max for sugar useage. It is not...

    another first AG post BIAB

Lazy answer for starting amount of strike water in your pot-----for 5.5 gallons at flame out-----7.5 gallons. That's assuming that you are using about 10lbs of grain and boiling for 1 hour at a light boil. Something that will help you a lot is to take a measuring stick and mark the different...

    Table Sugar vs Corn?

Go ahead and use table sugar. I do not find much difference to corn sugar. I use 2/3 cup white table sugar to prime for bottling all the time---no difference in my opinion. The big problem is when you use too high of a percentage of sugar in your beer. For a 5 gallon batch I would not use...
