    1 year lost to beer...

It's quite the adventure for sure. It hasn't been a year yet for me, I've learned a lot, also learned I have a lot more to learn. I also went from an inconspicious Mr. Beer kit and cooler to a closet half full of equipment and fermentation fridge for doing 5 gal batches. With the intent of...

    What do you drive?

1999 Honda Shadow ACE motorcycle daily to work 2006 Nissan Armada is the the family/wifes car. 1991 Jeep Cherokee, my rain day rig instead of the bike and also my 4-wheelin' rig.

    Do you have a beard?

Have a goat going on. It will go 3-4 inches before wifey decides it's too long, and then I cut it down to about half that. If it were up to me, it would grow until it was getting in the way of things, like dipping into my food.

What is the best way to controll your temp?

Add 1 more for a dedicated fridge, freezer with a temp controller. Craigslist is a great source for frigdes and freezers for cheap, often less than a couple batches of beer. Entirely worth it. Controllers can range in prices from dirt cheap to well over $100 depending on what you want or...

What kind of HDTV do you have and what made you buy it?

48" Vizio 1080p 120Hz LCD from Costco here. Had it for 2 years now with no problems. It's a huge upgrade from the 40" plasma 720 we used to have. Consumer Reports is a good and trusted source to check out. Once you see what you like, price shopping for that particular model can pay off.

    Why brewing kits?

I like the kits for now because they are easy enough to find and are generally already tried and trued. Most online stores have reviews of the kits, you can learn from those reviews whether or not it's worth your time to brew or not. Also you get a good handle of certain styles and flavor...

Oops! Racked on top of Starsan. How bad will it be??

Can't say I've done this myself, but it is my understanding that you will be fine, worst case, it may seem a little "watery" in the end.

    Best brew kit?

I agree with Revvy. Which is the best brew kit is like asking what time is the best time to eat lunch. The best kit is the one that you like and works for you. I like the Liberty Cream Ale (good after a day in the AZ sun) from Midwest Supplies, but it may be another one I find later...

    hello from phoenix!

Welcome to your new obsession in life! Look around on Craigslist for fridges or freezers you can use for fermentation chambers, was the best move I made for living in the SE valley of Phoenix.

    Kickoff party tonight!

As I am pretty much still a beginner brewer, less than 10 batches, I've learning sticking to the "recipe" is a good start. No need to get crazy and do things differently. I've been using mostly Midwest Supplies kits with good results following their guide lines. Sanitizing, aeration before...

    Question about Mr. Beer cooling

I fit into that catagory. My first true 5 gal. batch was considerably better than my last Mr. Beer batch. It was beer, it was ok, but stepping up was worth it. Was it the Mr Beer learning curve? Or was it gear and ingredients? Both? I say 30% Mr Beer curve, 60% gear and...

I believe I need to just get a sample and have it tested, but can anyone tell me something good or bad from this report they have online: Johnson Utilites Water Report I had emailed them asking specifics, but they just refered me to that link  Or if anyone on here from my area...

    Lessons learned from first brew

Didn't the instructions give a specific temp range to steep at? Usually around 155 or so for about 30 mins (a general guide, not law.) Above 170 you'll get undesirable tannins. Certainly could have effected head retention, and taste.

    Which A19 controller?

Just as a follow up, the analog Johnson Controller is model A19AAT-2. I've got one batch bottled and one fermenting since ordering it and putting it to use. Seems to be spot on so far.

    How big of a fridge?

The sanyo 4433 will hold a 6.5 gallon bucket fermenter with the only mod being cutting outhe door shelves. Will probably hold the 7.5 if your willing to bend down the upper freezer shelf. Found mine on craigslist for $40.
