    Possible fermenter?

Hey guys. In my never ending quest to cheap out on equipment, I saw these 2.5 gallon ice mountain water jugs at the store for $2. Would these be a possible primary fermenter for 1.25 gal batches? Figured i could use the water as well. They are #2 HDPE, and are about the same rigidity of a milk...

    My citric acid mild

I just brewed a 2.5g mild and according to the brewersfriend calculator, I needed to add 3g of citric acid to my mash to lower my pH. I used citric because that is all my LHBS carried. Now I have a chemically citrusy mild (Hey, I hit all my numbers exactly though!!). I'm sure it was my own...

    Starter or not?

I'm going to brew a mild coming up. 2.5 gal, target OG is 1.039. On brewday, my Wyeast 1469 will be 50 days old. According to sources, it will only be at 65% viability. So I will have 65 billion cells, and my target according to the brewersfriend calculator is 92 billion cells. If I pitch...

    Boiling small grain particles.

Just did my 3rd biab. Lhbs double crushed my grains this time for my dry Irish stout. After the boil I noticed a decent amount of grain bits at the bottom of the pot. Do I need to strain these? Or just leave em in? I have a 400 micron strainer that fits over a 5 gallon bucket, so I could do it...

Hey everybody. Doing a 2.5 gallon AG Strong Scotch ale. Still new to all the tyoes of grains out there and I have a question about my recipe. Here is the grain bill: 7 lbs Golden Promise Malt 0.5 lbs American Caramel 60°L 0.5 lbs German Light Munich 0.25 lbs Belgian Cara-Pils 0.125...

    Doing 1 gallon BIAB's

Hey guys. I love this hobby, and can't get enough of it. I currently do 2.5 gallon BIAB batches, but I am thinking of switching to 1 gallon. Here are my reasons. I don't have a whole lot of room in my house, and even 2.5 gal kind of maxes out my space. It's just me drinking the homebrew...

    Hello propane burner!

Picking up a bayou cooker propane burner tomorrow. This will cut down on my time I take to get to a boil with my electric stove. Are there any things I need to be concerned with or pay attention to (other than safety) when switching from stovetop to a 210,000 btu burner?

    Fermentation ice bath

Hey guys, I have decided that fermenting at 80 or so isn't such a good idea. So I am in the market for a tub for making an water bath for my fermenter. My question is this. Would buying an insulated 10 gallon beverage cooler (ie. igloo, coleman) be better than buying something like this...

Bottling a beer with a high FG

So, I have a beer that I am bottling today. I mashed too hot, and the FG finished at 1.034. It has been that for 2 weeks. Do i need to make any adjustments to calculating the amount of priming sugar since I still have a lot of sugar in there? Or will it be the same since the are...

    Fermentation stuck for good

Hey guys. Looks like my fermentation has stopped a bit early. Looking back on it I'm pretty sure I underpitched, fermented way too warm, and possibly under aerated (all of which will be fixed from now on.) I brewed the Dreadnaught recipe listed here from BYO, but I did 2.5 gallons BIAB so the...

Would this work for a grain mill?

Here is the mill - mtn gearsmith grain mill http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0051MQ14Q/?tag=skimlinks_replacement-20 Is this similar to a corona mill, and would it work?

    Hops not there

Just got done with a double ipa, The Three Floyd's dreadnaught clone in BYO. After the boil, I took a reading of 1.082, better than I expected for first all grain. When I drank the hydrometer sample, I was amazed at the lack of hops in the sample even though I calculated 107 ibu's. Could it...

    First biab, grain crush questions.

Hey guys, doing my first biab tomorrow! Got a quick question though. I bought my grains pre-crushed from northern brewer since I do not live close to a lhbs. The bags have a lot of grain dust in them which in no way can be held in the grain bag. Should I dump it in, or try to avoid it at all...

    Spigots for small buckets

Hey everybody, new brewer here and I have a quick question. I have been looking at making my own bottling bucket from a 2 gallon icing bucket from my local bakery. The spigots at my LHBS and online say "for 6.5 to 7.9 gallon buckets." Would it be okay to use one of these or are there...
