    Thermometer question

Real encouraging support. Surprising from "senior" members. That's fine. I just don't think the bimetal ones are worth a crap and using a probe and such also seems like a pain. And would ultimately be more costly at $90+ for a good handheld and potentially more if you want to use a...

    Thermometer question

Why do all of the bi-metal thermometers have such a broad range? For the mash, you really only need a range between 120 and 170. Does anyone know if there are thermometers with that narrow of a range that maybe span a large dial so that you might be able to get closer to the range you are...

Grain again at the end of the runnings

I had another thought. I considered tying a small grain bag, like a hops addition bag, on the outlet of the hose to capture the small additonal amount of grain that shows up late in the runnings. The amount is small enough that I don't think it will stop the siphon. Has anyone tried this? Any...

Grain again at the end of the runnings

Sorry, slow on the response. I do occasionally see bubbling in the hose like you described. Yes, the hose is relatively long. I like to make sure it reaches the bottom of the boiler in order to minimize splashing and aeration (probably doesn't matter between the mash and the boil). So, just...

Grain again at the end of the runnings

Hi All, What would cause this? I have a 10G rubbermaid round cooler with a SS FB for my MLT. I have had this happen the last two brewing sessions. I go through the mash, then vorlauf till clear, then as I get toward the end of the run off I get grain back in the runnings after it had flowed...

    Thoughts on hotter hose water?

I'm in Centennial on ECCV water. Overall it's been pretty good, but it does change through out the year depending on what aquifer they are pulling/blending from. I'd call the water district and have them test your water at the tap and have them give you the results. They're normally pretty...

    Thoughts on hotter hose water?

FWIW, I use hot water right out of the tab, no filter, to fill my HLT for Strike. I used to filter the hot water out of the tab, but the hot water is a ***** on water filters. They only last like one batch and then the flow gets so slow i have to through them out. Then use filtered cold...

HELP! 1st Time Kegging Force Carbonation Question

I take mine from room temperature and put it in the Keezer. As it is chilling I put about 35 to 40 PSI on it. I check in 24 hours. Normally, It's chilled and almost the right carb at that time. Sometimes, it will come out just slightly under carb'd and needs another 4 hours or so at 35 to 40 PSI...

    Suggestions for Secondary Addition

Thanks Golddiggie, I think I'm convinced. I think I'll try to medium toast for about three weeks, taste and see if it needs more or I want to add the vanilla.

    Suggestions for Secondary Addition

The only thing about the oak, I don't want to end up with a smoke or swartzbier feel and I think some of the darker toasts might add that complexion. Any opinions? Am I off base? Maybe go with a light toast? Or would raw oak be overwhelming?

    Suggestions for Secondary Addition

I just made the Carmel Vanilla Cream ale from Cheesefood and it came out great. I still have two vanilla beans. Good suggestion Golddiggie. How about both, the oak and the vanilla? Too much?

    Suggestions for Secondary Addition

Hi All, I have 10 gallons of what I call Fat ESB or Bitter Tire. It's a cross between, duh, Fat Tire and an ESB. Presently, the 10 gallons are in 2 - 6.5 gallon carboys finishing out their primary. I'm interested in adding something to the secondary of one of the two but I'm not sure what I...

About to drive 2 hours to purchase...

One thing I would save some money for would be kegging. I almost stopped brewing because of the effort and pain of bottling. I'm not saying you need it to start out, but start thinking about it. It saved me from quitting. Now I brew a batch every two weeks and am kegging a new batch about every...
