Fermenting in a corny - problems?

I started out fermenting in them. I did have problems with them not sealing, so I hit them with 30PSI of CO2, purge and then take off the gas post to put on a blowoff tube. I'm doing 5 gallons batches in a 5 gallon keg with Fermcap-S and minimal blowoff. My beer comes out clean and clean into...

Guide to Making a Frozen Yeast Bank

Cobalt Irradiation is also still used by some businesses. I would avoid that and the EtO, as well. I don't think anyone here would try to use EtO, but just as a warning, it is also toxic, flammable, explosive, mutagenic, carcinogenic and has a nasty habit of undergoing a violent exothermic...

So how many corny kegs exactly is too many?

I have 14 pin lock and 1 ball lock, although I owe two pin locks to a friend after he gets his house remodeled. The ball lock was one that I found after a flood in 1985, and the pin locks came from the local bottler, the only cost was the time it took me to make some phone calls to ask if they...

    So who's brewing this weekend?

I had just racked 5 gallons of Scottish 70 to a serving keg last night. Washed out the fermenter, sanitized it and made an apfelwein during lunch. The only difficulty was that I had to change shirts because I spilled airlock vodka on it. While my home is a brewery, they wouldn't appreciate me...

    I hate carboys.

I'm wondering why more people aren't just repairing the scratches in their buckets? I've previously used flame polishing to take scratches out of plexiglass and I did the same to some "ruined" buckets that another brewer was throwing away. They went from scratched and ugly to smooth as glass...

    Pin Lock Conversion?

Without a vent entirely or just without a pull for the relief valve? I have only two pin lock kegs with a relief valve pull, and the rest have a relief valve without a pull. You can either vent the keg through the gas in or replace the pull-less lids with ball lock style lids that do have the...

    Pin Lock Conversion?

+1 I have 14 pin lock kegs across three different manufacturers and my experience is similar. Firestone is one way (straight) and Cornelius is the other (curved) and Hoover Universal is like one of the other two, but I can't remember which.

Regulator and C02 cylinder won't mate

JRems is right. My CO2 tank has one of these as well. http://www.austinhomebrew.com/product_info.php?products_id=12694 It seems like a good idea, I'll have to see if my regulator fits when I get the rest of my kegging equipment.

    Fermentation done in three days?

I made my first batch, a Little Kings cream ale from AHS, on Saturday and I noticed today that fermentation had stopped. I had missed the target OG of 1.048 by quite a bit, and hit 1.030. It has also been cold here and the temps in the house have gotten down into the high 50's a couple of times...

    So who's brewing this weekend?

Little Kings extract brew from AHS, done and in the fermenter. This is my first batch, so I hope it turns out great!

WORST Home Brew Store experience ever!

I just wish I had a local HBS. The nearest would probably be Austin Homebrew Supply or one of the stores in the DFW area, but both of them are just a little over 200 miles away.

    No pressure relief valve

I haven't seen any lids without the PRV, but it doesn't suprise me that they exist. Perhaps the lids that you have are from one of the many other applications that cornys were used for. I have seen them used in low pressure applications like eye wash stations and dairy, so I don't imagine all of...

    No pressure relief valve

Pin lock kegs do have a PRV, but it is not a manual release type. I would imagine a pressurized container without a PRV could easily become a bomb of sorts. The PRV on pin lock kegs is in the same place as on a ball lock keg (center of the lid), and they can develop leaks. If your pin lock...

    scratches in stainless steel

If you are worried abou it, go find some Bar Keeper's Friend. It is a good cleaner for stainless and can re-passivate the stainless steel so that it won't rust. I just used it on a dirty, rusty 20 qt pot that I found in one of the barns at the family farm and it took off all of the rust and...

Someone gave me kegs... and I don't know what to do

All of those McMaster parts work just fine with my pin-lock kegs.

    Carb then Disconnect

When I picked up my corny kegs (still full of soda) from the Coca Cola distributor, they had been sitting on a pallet on a parking lot for at least 5 -7 years and they were still carbed.

Someone gave me kegs... and I don't know what to do

These are the lid o-rings that I ordered a couple of weeks ago. They work just fine with ball lock or pin lock. The only o-ring I was even a little concerned with was the dip-tube o-ring, since it seems quite a bit thicker than the original, but it held when I pressure tested them overnight at...

Someone gave me kegs... and I don't know what to do

+1 with regard to the McMaster parts. They work great on pin lock style kegs too. I picked up 14 pin lock kegs from our local Coca-Cola distributor for the promise of a sample of my product when I get started, and after spending about $30 at McMaster, I had enough rings to rebuild all of the...
