The strangest thing I've ever put in a recipe is...

Did the skittle brew when I was still doing a lot of extracts before I went AG. Pretty sure the base recipe was MidwestSupplies Big Ben Pale Ale. Tossed in about a pound of them at flameout. Me and the group of guys I brew with do a super unconventional beer once every year. There were some...

Help me make my IPA better

My personal opinion is that chinook hops are a better addition right at the beginning of the boil. In most of my IPA's I use the chinooks to add bitterness (at the start) and the others as necessary throughout the boil. In my experience that works better. Also I would just choose one type of...

The strangest thing I've ever put in a recipe is...

Skittles. Fermented right out and was actually a pretty nice drinking beer, if a little fruity.

    Building my own glycol chiller

Two things to mention, The guy I brew with is insane about wasting water. And since our rig will be at his house technically it's his water we would be wasting. How much water do you think I would use cooling 1bbl of wort? The other thing is that for this set up I already own all the equipment...

    Building my own glycol chiller

I have a 1bbl system in the works. I already have two 36 gal ss fermentation tanks and a 160 qt kettle retrofitted to boil over a 75,000 btu propane heater. 150 qt mash tun in a chest cooler with a braid to drain. My question is this: I really have no acceptable and inexpensive way to chill...

adding flameout hops into cooling wort

I think the results that you are looking for with your aromatic hop addition may be best achieved by doing a First Wort Hop or FWH. In my experience you get a better aroma by allowing the Alphaic Acids to isometrize differently. Read this article and it will tell you everything you need to know...

Double IPA, 90 minute? Dogfish involved?

I have a fantastic 90 minute recipe that I formulated myself. I've done this both as an extract (4 batches) and an all grain (2 batched) and it always came out fantastic. I actually got better results out of the extract because my efficiency was a little low all grain, but everyone always loves...

Which two row should I buy in bulk?

I think that's a good choice. I use Briess and I really like it. I have always been happy with the results. On another note Briess makes a wonderful 'pesticide free' version of the same 2-row if you're a purist. I usually spend the extra for it.

    Chocolate Stout... What and when?

For a 5 gallon batch I add 4 oz of bittersweet baking chocolate at turn off. This is the way Founders does it as well as Bell's and I have tried and found 4 oz to be the perfect amount for 5 gal. However I was adding coffee too so you may want to up it to 6 oz if it is to compete with the strong...
