    Trying a "Berry Apfelwein"

After having our second child 4 months ago and going on a brewing hiatus, I am easing back into it with an easy cider recipe I mixed up today. Here's the ingredient list I used: 4 gallons Kirkland Apple Juice (no preservatives, from concentrate) 1/2 gallon White House Apple Juice (no...

Siphoning - How low do you go?

Dear Helpful Homebrew People, Regarding siphoning...what's your philosophy when racking to secondary and racking to a bottling bucket (I assume they're different). At what point do you stop siphoning? When the slightest bit of solids are there, all the way down to the trub/yeast cake...

    My EVIL Thermometer

I brewed a pale ale yesterday, my fourth all grain batch, and was hoping this would be my smoothest brew day yet. My Evil Thermometer ("ET") had different plans. I heated my mash water until ET said I hit the 165 deg F strike temp. After adding the mash water, ET told me I was around 156...

Check out what I found in my trub...

I found this poor bugger buried in the trub when I racked from primary to secondary. I have no idea how it got in there but am hoping it was during the boil. Perhaps this IPA brew will be know as my BeePA.

    Overcarbonated...now what?

My first all-grain batch tastes good, but is definitely overcarbonated. It pours very frothy, but more importantly, I had a bottle bomb a few days ago when the weather warmed up to the low 80's here in NC. Maybe that bottle was a little weakened somehow, but it's gotten me worried I might have...

    Carboy vs. Bottle Conditioning

I recently made a batch of cider/apfelwein using the following recipe. -4 gallons White House Apple Juice (no preservatives, but it is from concentrate) -½ gallon Trader Joe’s Apple Juice (no preservatives) -½ gallon Trader Joe’s Spiced Cider (no preservatives) -2 lb Turbinado Sugar -5 gm...

    My $5.08 DIY Sparge Arm

Sparging with a measuring cup for my first two all-grain batches was not fun, so I decided to build a sparge arm. I thought I would share the project with you fine beer-guzzling folks. I wanted to build something that is simple, cheap, and height adjustable for various size grain bills. I'm...

    Bottle Tree w/ 22oz Bottles?

Hi Folks, I'm trying to make my bottling life easier and am thinking about getting a bottling tree like the 45-bottle one here Does anyone have experience using this with 22oz bottles? Will it hold 45 of them, or does it only hold 45 of the 12oz bottles and not as many 22oz bottles?

KAPOW! - My First Bottle Bomb

I guess it was bound to happen sometime. I discovered my first exploded bottle today. I say "discovered" because it clearly did not blow up today since everything was bone dry - glass shrapnel and all. I have an idea why this might have happened but wanted to see what you fine folks think...

    Funny thing happened today

So, several months ago I tried my first shot at brewing hard cider. After fermenting, bottling, and waiting a couple weeks, my family and I tried it. The general consensus…not good. The best word I could use to describe it was “musty”. Not very pleasant at all. I couldn’t bring myself to...

    Howdy

Hey Folks, I started brewing about a year ago and have been getting a lot out of reading these forums, so figured it was time to join. I’ve done about a half dozen extract/specialty grain batches and just recently got started in all-grain shenanigans, having done my second all-grain batch a...
