Homebrewing myths that need to die

I usually get mid 80's. Last batch was 87%.

Homebrewing myths that need to die

My submittable. You can't get good efficiencies doing BIAB.

All Grain - What to do when overshooting preboil volume?

It depends on if I hit my preboil gravity. If I did, then I change nothing, and make extra beer. :ban: If my preboil gravity is too low, I extend the boil off rate to reach my anticipated OG. I have slight variations in boil off rate, so I have a range I'm shooting for. So if its just a...

    Biab efficiency

ACK! Never had any problems with Maris Otter on my hand crank malt mill. My LHBS has told me their mill always gets messed up when customers adjust it (without doing it properly), so I wonder if that could caused your problems? When I am feeling lazy (and hell that's most of the time :D...

    Biab efficiency

I'm still hand cranking, so its easier just to feed the grains through twice. If I ever get off my lazy butt and motorize my mill, a tight gap would work fine. :rockin:

    Biab efficiency

I run my grains through my malt mill twice. Usually get eff around 80%.

What NOT to do: Near carboy EXPLOSION

Why wait till there is a problem to use a blow-off? I always use a blow-off for the first week of fermentation, no matter the style of beer, nor how much head space the carboy (better bottle, or buckets) has. But yeah, an airtight seal in the blow off container is a BAD idea. I was happy to...

    No sparge....am i going nuts

My 1.070 Scottish Ale hit 79% eff. I recently did a 1.062 IPA that got 76% eff. Most of my recipes are in the 1.050 range, and their effs are pretty consistent with these results. I haven't brewed anything above 1.070 yet. I haven't noticed a significant drop in eff with higher gravs. But like...

    No sparge....am i going nuts

I do no sparge BIAB, I double crush my grains and consistently get 78-80% efficiencies.

Wow, I never knew cream ales and wheat beers aren't real beers!

What do you do during the mash?

I start my brew days early. So I take a shower and eat breakfast during the mash.

What the hell did I make???

It never fails, I can plan a recipe for months and hit all my numbers brewing it, but my best beers have always been my "use up the left-over grains/hops/old yeast" batches.

    BIAB "Experiment" Gone Wrong

My brew shop sells a large bag that fits my 8 gallon brew kettle with plenty of room to spare. I actually have a lot of extra bag when I use it in my kettle. http://www.barleynvine.com/5054.html

BIAB - sparge or no sparge

I use an 8 gallon boil kettle infused with 6 gallons of water. This will fit up to an 11 lb grain bill. I double crush. No-sparge, I pull the grains out at the end of the rest and place a small grill rack across the pot to set the bag on till the run-off turns into a slow drip (this usually...
