    The [Horribly Unpopular] Soccer Thread

As a (soon to be formerly if this keeps up) Spurs fan, I'm glad I had errands to run today. Sent from my MB886 using Home Brew mobile app

Agreed. I’ve got a serious MLS (and EPL) jones going on. We’re in the same boat up here. Whether we qualify for the hexagonal is down to the last match, the big difference being that the last time we went to a World Cup was in 1986 and we haven’t gone to the hexagonal in a while, either.

After the debacle in Seattle, I’m looking forward to Whitecaps v. Timbers in a couple of weeks. I’ve got tickets in the Supporters Section, which is the only way to watch, really. (Other than the fact that if you watch at home you have more options than Budweiser or Budweiser)...

    The [Horribly Unpopular] Soccer Thread

Vancouver gave Chivas USA a four-nil drubbing last night and played the best football I've seen them play. Not a weak link on the field. Finally. It was getting worrisome for a bit, there. Still too tight with Dallas, but our win ended Chivas', Portland's and Colorado's playoff aspirations...

Agreed. At the time, most Leagues had limits on the number of foreign players per team. Very few clubs had money to splash out on international superstars before earning a lot of money through selling tv rights. At the time Europe was still a pretty nationally (as opposed to continentally)...

Mapquest said 4 hrs. I live in Canada and on the west coast, so that's peanuts. In December I'm moving to Victoria and plan on coming back to Vancouver once a month for matches. That's an hour to the ferry, a 1.5hr ferry ride and an hour into town. Well worth it, though. St. Louis should...

You do have one of the strongest sides in the league in Kansas City, though. It’s a little late in the season, but I’d highly suggest a road trip to catch a match next season. Nothing like seeing your regional team kick some ass in front of 18,000 fans.

I haven’t been on here much, since I haven’t had much time to brew with 2 kids under the age of 3. I’ve started a beer and soccer blog that some of you might be interested in, with beer reviews and discussion about soccer, especially the MLS (with a Whitecaps focus)...

Yes. They get draft choices and player allotments. They don’t get quite as much of that as Toronto, though. Portland hasn’t done well, but show some promise at times. Toronto is just hopeless.

So my stupid ass threw away the priming sugar before bottling

Don’t worry about cooling it. The small volume of hot sugar water will barely affect the temperature of the 5G of wort that you’re going to siphon on top of it. Plus, sticking it in the fridge and having it pass through the temperature danger zone just gives you another opportunity...

Gravity just not getting down there....

If the yeast are done it won’t change the gravity, but with a beer that big it can take a while for the beer to drop the last few points. As some people have mentioned, adding yeast at this point in the game will be of pretty limited usefulness. There’s already a lot of alcohol in there and...

    mango nail polish remover anyone?

That's the way meads are. Give them time to mellow, and extra time if they fermented hot.

Those aren't kegs, they're casks. Perfect for low-tech real ale kegging.

    "Hot Maturation" IPA

IPA's were originally designed to last the long trip by sailing ship from England to India via some very warm parts of the world. I think that you would find this book very interesting: http://www.amazon.com/Hops-and-Glory/dp/0330511866/ref=pd_sim_b_4

2nd All Grain - Way Undershot target gravity

It sounds like you need to leave the loss amounts where they are and lower your expected efficiency.

Ball valve on kettle, flow issues (bazooka)?

I know. It's a thing of beauty (both of the visual and the olfactory varieties.)

Ball valve on kettle, flow issues (bazooka)?

Just 2oz of hops. Pretty significant trub, though. I actually pulled out one of my muslin hop bags, which I hadn't used since installing the kettlevalve, at the beginning of the brew day. I was going to use it for ease of clean-up and then totally forgot about it. I think it's probably time...

Ball valve on kettle, flow issues (bazooka)?

For a brew last night I borrowed a friend's Shirron in the hopes that it would shorten my brew day. I've got a kettlevalve with the kettlescreen, and got pretty much zero flow into the fermenter. There was a lot of swearing, opening and closing the valve and then a bunch of beer loss to the...

    Consistency issues

Are you checking your grain temperature before calculating your mash temperature and water amounts?

all my beers have been finishing 1.003ish

I'd agree that it's likely a hydrometer problem. I had one that was out by 0.010, so I took it back. It's always good to have a couple in case you drop one, so buy another one and check yours against it.
