Why did my wine kit come with two yeast packs?

This is my first attempt at making wine. Subject pretty much says it all. My malbec-shiraz kit had two yeast packets in it. I pitched one tonight, but wondering if I should've pitched them both. Thanks!

Making my first kit, do I really need 2 six gallon carboys?

I am planning to make my first wine kit this weekend, and it looks like I'll need to rack it twice. I bought a 7.9 gallon bucket for primary, and a 6 gallon glass carboy. I don't have another 6 gallon fermenter for my 2nd racking, so here's what I am considering: 1. Use a 6.5 gallon carboy...

    What's a good price for a ball-lock keg?

I see that kegs are getting more and more expensive. I found a guy on craigslist willing to sell me 5 kegs for $225. Is that a good deal?

Can I make a cyser in time for christmas?

Local orchards are selling fresh cider. I have 5 lbs of honey that I need to use up. Can I make a batch of cyser that will be drinkable in time for christmas? I am looking to either make a 3 gallon batch, or a 5 gallon batch.

    Flying internatially with homebrew

My parents are flying from the US to Ukraine, and then Belgium to visit some relatives. I'd like to give them some of my homebrew to take along. Has anyone packed homebrew in their checked luggage recently? Have you had any problems with TSA because of it?

Are there any kind of bottles I can freeze and drop in the wort without concerns?

I am planning to mess around with small batches, and my wort chiller won't fit into my pot. An ice-batch is not really an option for me either. There are a lot of people asking about using water filled and frozen soda bottles, and everyone always says that it's not a good idea because...

Cheap way to deal with all the steam in the kitchen?

I brew on my electric stove with a help of the heatstick. The vent is a part of the microwave that sits above the stove, and it doesn't work very well. As a matter of fact, it died last night from too much steam. Thankfully, it ended up coming back to life a few hours later. While vent was...

Is 36 hours on a stirplate enough for a starter?

A friend will be joining me for a brew day, and I am not prepared. If I make a starter Thursday night, will it be ready for pitching by Saturday afternoon? I am not planning to make anything over with OG over 1.060. Should I use dry yeast or two vials of liquid instead of a starter?

Bought a temperature controller without a probe

I purchased the MYPIN TA4 Temperature Controller without reading the description too carefully. Only after I received it, I realized that it doesn't have a temperature probe. I have no idea what to do at this point.

Is it normal for the heating element to get dirty?

I used a heat stick in my last brew, and noticed that the heating element was covered in gunk after I took it out. It looked like rust, but I am guessing it's hot break and hop debris. I was able to wipe it pretty easily using some bar keeper's friend. Is that normal?

Calculating starting water volume for BIAB

I got a 10 gallon brew pot, and built a 2,000W heatstick. I filled it with 6 gallons of water today, set it on my electric stove and plugged in the heatstick. When the temperature reached about 200F, I realized that I never turned on the stove burner. I was hoping it would speed up my boil...

Getting the chilled wort from kettle to fermenter

I got a 10 gallon pot with a 1/2" NPT Weldless Compact valve with 3/8" flow port. I didn't think when I purchased it, but I am not sure what I need to get the wort from the pot to the fermenter? Would this work? Husky 5-Piece 3/8 in. Hose Repair Kit Also, what material hose do I need...

Do I need to seal the rubber part of the water heating element on my heatstick?

I built a heatstick yesterday, but noticed that there's an thick exposed piece of rubber at the connection end. Does that need to be sealed with JB Weld, or will that be OK in the boil?

Looking for a cheapest heatstick cord for 20A circuit with a 2000W stick

I got all the pieces for my heastick, except the cord. According to a tutorial, I need a 12 gauge cord, but the only one I found is very thick, and not pliable enough for something like a heatstick. I looked at extension cords to take apart. I found some at lowes that claim to be 16 gauge...

    1500 vs 1000 watt heatstick

My 1000 watt bucket water heater on my electric stove can bring 4 gallons of water to a lazy boil. It sounds like full a volume all-grain "brew in a bag" will need to boil as much as 7 gallons from the start. I am worried that my current heat stick won't be able to do the job. I am...

Can't find any resources on how to make the bag for "brew in a bag"

I am ready to jump into all-grain, and want to start with brew in a bag. However, my google-fu is lacking, and I can't seem to find any resources on how to make the bag itself. I don't have a sewing machine, but I don't mind doing it by hand. I am basically looking for a simple how-to which...

Is there a cheap way to keep track of temperature over a period of time?

I am looking for something I can tape to the side of my fermentor and have it record the temperature every X minutes. Then, I want to plug it into my computer and see how the temperature has been fluctuating.

    Fermentation stuck at 1.030

I tried brewing an imperial stout, which came out to 1.072 OG. After a month in the basement, my SG was 1.030. I think that was due to the temperature. So, I racked to secondary and moved it to a warmer room two weeks ago. The gravity is still 1.030, but it tastes pretty good. Is it dangerous to...

Is this a decent pot for 5 gallon batches?

I decided to stop drooling over the $300+ Boilermaker and found this 8 gallon pot. It looks like a pretty decent price. Would this work well?

Will 3 lbs of LME + 6 lbs of honey work for my first attempt?

I have 3 lbs of Light LME left. I am considering buying 6 lbs of honey and boiling the whole thing with .5oz of leftover hops for 20-30 minutes. I have a few questions: Will I end up with something drinkable? What kind of yeast should I use? Will LME provide enough nutrients, or should I...
