    first time kegging questions

Thanks everyone! I did reset it to 12 and it has stayed there since (4 days). Maybe next time I will pre-chill the kegs. I tasted it (about 6.5 days since kegging) and it is close but not yet to my goal of 2.5 volumes. I am so tempted to shake it to get it carbed up because it tastes SO GOOD...

    Super Fast Fermentation?

About the taste, missing the OG will obviously affect alcohol but you are close enough that I dont think the taste difference will be noticeable. With that much hops how can it taste bad! The problem is that if you get used to beers like Pliny, any beers less than 100 IBUs will start to taste...

    Can I speed up carbonation?

Hello! I am kegging for the first time and decided to do the "set it and forget it" method. We have a party coming up and I would love to serve the beer but it is still a little undercarbonated (I set it at 12 and it has only been 5 days). It is getting close but not there yet. Is there any...

    Super Fast Fermentation?

I am by no means a master brewer but have attempted pliny clones many times and have had similar difficulties hitting the OG. A longer boil has helped me fyi. About the fermentation, I wouldnt worry about the bubbling (I bet there is a leak somewhere in your airlock) as the numbers indicate...

    first time kegging questions

So I have a few probably simple questions about kegging as I am in the process of doing it for the first time 1. I am doing the "set and forget" method. I set my pressure at 12psi then put the keg and regulator in the fridge at 40F. The next day I noticed it trickle down to 10 and stay...

    first time kegging questions

Hello! I will be kegging for the first time and had a few questions. 1) It seems like the two most popular methods are either cranking the tank to 30 for 1-2 days then turning down to 10 before serving or setting it at the desired PSI and waiting 2 weeks. Is there any FLAVOR advantages...

Question about time to drain MLT

Hello and a preemptive thanks to all who respond. I batch sparge and use a 70qt coleman extreme with a hose braid (about 8 inches long) and a 1/2 inch ball valve. Each of my runnings is taking about 30 minutes (to collect 3.5 gallons each for a total pre-boil volume of 7 gallons). Does this...

    some bottles not carbonated

Sorry for the late reply and thanks for the post. I didnt keep track of which ones I bottled first unfortunately so I dont know about that. I didnt try to twist the caps but they seemed to be on there firmly. when I cracked them they felt the same other than without the carbonation sound...

    some bottles not carbonated

So this is the second batch I have bottled where some bottles are not carbonated at all and others (thankfully most) are carbonated perfectly. My guess is this is a capping / caps problem but the bottles and caps look exactly the same and the capper is a good, sturdy bench mounted capper that I...

problem boiling with new converted keg and sq14

Hello out there Had a brew day yesterday that was going great until I tried to use my new converted keg and new burner (a bayou classic sq14). It took 90 minutes to bring my 6.5gallons to a slow rolling boil only. What is going on? With the keg on the stand the bottom of the keg is a good...

    Help with first yeast starter

OK, so this will be my first yeast starter. I am making an american amber with an OG of 1.052. I will be making a 5 gallon batch but usually end up with 5.5 gallons post boil (7 gallon pre-boil). Using the online Mr. Malty calculator it says I need one activator pack in 2L for a simple...

    starter help

I am about to do my first Starter. The OG of the beer is 1.052 and it will be a 5 gallon batch. I used the Mr. Malty calculator and it said one pack and 1.14 liters of starter volume with intermittent shaking. Is that a propagator or activator. I am planning on using one cup of DME to the...

    Why do a starter?

OK I'm in. Sounds like starters produce happier, healthier yeast. I buy it. A few more questions though. How long can you keep left over yeast from a previous batch? For my next batch I will need to buy the yeast. Can I use the smaller "propagator" packet or do I need the larger...

    Why do a starter?

I am about to brew my second batch of all grain and was recently chastised at my local homebrew shop for not using yeast starters. I understand that a yeast starter increases yield and produces healthier yeast. On my last 5 gallon batch I just used 2 activator packs (Wyeast 1056 ale) and it...

    slow runnings question

Thanks for the replies. I was thinking of just going ahead and building a copper manifold so maybe that is the way to go. I will try the longer braid in the meantime since they are cheap. How long do you think I should go? Length of the cooler?

    slow runnings question

Hello I am about to embark on my second all-grain batch. My first time went great other than very slow runnings from my MLT (a 70qt coleman extreme with a hose braid drain). I batch sparged and each time I drained the MLT it took 45 minutes to an hour each time. It was a 7 gallon pre-boil...

    hops storage question

I recently brewed a batch of beer using whole leaf hops and had about an ounce of each left over. I put them in zip lock bags and left them in the fridge. In retrospect I should have put them in the freezer. Anyways, that was 3 weeks ago and I am thinking of doing another batch to use up the...
