What plays the biggest factor in color?

Please let me know what makes the biggest change in the color? 1. Time of boil 2. Amount of water in the boil 3. OG/Amount of extract in the boil 4. Color of extract Everything seems to come out the same color with my current techniques. Thanks, steve

Color of Ales - brewing technique for lightness

What are factors that will keep my ales from all looking about the same orangey/brown color? I'm an extract brewer, and the extract seems nice and light in the bag/bottle, and then turns dark in the kettle. Pale/light colored wheat beer desired. steve

I'm gonna try 2 5gal cornys and 2 2.5gal cornys. I don't know if they'll fit or not. the 2.5gals will be for kids apple/fruit juice and wife's wine spritzer. the 5gals will be for what I brew or a sixtel for parties. steve

Edumacate me on boil times and when to add LME/DME

I'm good with the full boil - I'm using an 8gal pot, so no boil-over issues with 3-4 gal extract boils. Thanks for all the responses, what I'm gonna take from this for my first self-designed recipe: 1. 45min total boil, bittering hops in the whole time. While I can appreciate a 60min boil...

Edumacate me on boil times and when to add LME/DME

Thanks Justibone! That explains questions 2 and 3, which are related. It still doesn't explain #1: Why boil the sugars the whole boil as standard practice? Oh, and how hard a boil is desirable after the "hot break" Thanks, steve

Edumacate me on boil times and when to add LME/DME

Hello, First beer brewed was a success. I noticed the wort got very dark in the last 10-20 minutes of the boil. I've been using beersmith, and noticing that you can either boil less hops longer or more hops shorter for a given target total IBU. Questions: 1. Why isn't it common practice...

Amount of boil water - using an extract kit

Hello everyone, I'm getting ready for my first batch soon, using a 30qt polarware on my gas range, and have an immersion chiller I've seen plenty of recommendations to do "full" boils, the american wheat kit from northernbrewers recipe directs to use 2.5 gal. Would there be a benefit to...

    Wort Chiller Pump Choice

Hello all, after a lot of lurking and watching my brother begin homebrewing, I've joined up. I just ordered most of my equipement from Northern Brewer, including a Wort Chiller with 3/8th copper and garden hose adaptors. I live in south florida with a well for water supply, so my water...
