Now legal to donate homebrew to nonprofit pouring events in CA

Its an interesting point about homebrew fests. I'm not sure what plans the NorCal Homebrew Fest have. I would assume the past interpretation of the rules would not change. I've been talking with the Trade Enforcement Unit of the Cal ABC and I found their interpretation of donating beer for...

Boosting gravity to 1.025 before going in a barrel?

Hi Folks, Some other homebrewers and I are filling a 60 gallon pinot barrel with a flanders red. Primary fermentation was done with cali yeast in carboys and we're all going to contribute beer to the barrel. We were shooting to mix everyone's beer in the barrel at a gravity of 1.025 to give...

Stainless in the Bay area, CA

Samuel and Sons in Hayward had the best pricing I could find for 1.5" square tubing. I would give them a call. http://www.samuel.com/en/Locations/Pages/USA.aspx

Brew-Age, web tv series on homebrewing culture in SF Bay Area

I'm the guy that was filmed in the introduction and build most of the equipment. I tried to stay out of the way on the brew day and let my brew buddies be the focus. As a result I wasn't jumping in and fixing issues as stuff occurred. Both are competent brewers, but I imagine the stress of two...

Brew-Age, web tv series on homebrewing culture in SF Bay Area

Its a great place to be! Let us know if you are ever back in town. We're like most homebrewers who dream of opening a brewery. I'm not sure if it will ever happen. We're just enjoy brewing on sundays, and talking with curious people walking by.

Brew-Age, web tv series on homebrewing culture in SF Bay Area

Definitely some good feedback, which I'll relay to the filmmakers. Yeah, I'm not sure if future episodes will include more info about the brewing process. From my understanding they are trying to focus more on the culture of homebrewing in the area.

(Full disclosure: We were filmed for the first episode) brew-age.com We were lucky enough to be included in the first episode of Brew-Age, a web tv series about beer/homebrew culture in SF Bay Area. From what I hear, this is first of several episodes lined up and will be released soon...

    Adjusting Monster Mill 2.0

You are correct, the hopper goes on over the mill and the thumbscrews must be removed during initial setup. If a remember correctly, there are also some bolts along the top which need to be screwed on after the hopper is attached.

    Adjusting Monster Mill 2.0

I have the same mill. I'm not sure I follow what you are doing, but here is how I would adjust the gap. A) Loosen the thumb screws (labeled 1 in the picture). B) Set the gap with the end nobs (labeled 2 in the picture). These rotate 360 degrees so they don't "tighten". C) Tighten the thumb...

MonsterMill thumbscrew tighness and gap adjustment

I had the same problem with my MM2 2.0. Finger tightening would not keep the gap consistent. It would grown substantially with the first 10lb of grain through the mill. I ended up using pliers too, but after 6 months managed to shear the heads off. I resolved the issue by contacting Monster...

    Napa Valley

Theres a commercial hop farm in Lake County (next county over from Napa) call Hops Meister. The owner Marty is really nice guy. http://www.hopsmeister.com/ He provides all the "local" wet hops to northern california breweries. Russian River used Marty's wet hops for the Toronado's 25th...

    San Francisco beer stops?

Check out the San Francisco Brewers Guild Website. It lists all the breweries/brewpubs in the city. http://sfbrewersguild.org/map To add to the list checkout Southern Pacific. Solid house beers and a great guest tap list.

I like More Beer in Los Altos and Oak Barrel in Oakland a lot. It seems like a lot of people have a love/hate relationship with SF Brewcraft.

    Pete's Wicked Ale

Nope, the parent company stop producing Pete's Wicked Ales a year or two ago. On a side note, Pete Slosberg is an awesome dude. He still lives in the SF Bay Area and is active in the brewing community. A really generous guy with both his time and expertise. I think he is advising several of the...

    Whole Hops Brewing

I prefer whole hop brewing over pellets. - I would not use a hop spider since the cones expand a lot - I would have a screen on your pickup tube/racking can/<insert however you get your wort into carboys> so your tubing doesn't get clogged - Whole hops absorb a lot of wort, so you'll lose some...

how best to utilize a glycol chiller

I picked one up at auction recently. I'm thinking about doing option 1, use it with my plate chiller. My thought was to plump the glycol chiller to an copper immersion chiller. Then use the immersion chiller to pre-chill a 55 gal drum of water to 35F. I would then use the 35F water to cool my...
