    Critique? India-style Rye Ale

Interesting. If I bump the flaked rye to 2#, and drop the 2-row to 8#, it comes out to 1.057 OG :) At 20% rye, I'd imagine I'd want some rice hulls in the mash.

    Critique? India-style Rye Ale

So last summer, Summit Brewing released #3 in their Unchained Series, what they called an India Style Rye Ale. I was able to grab a few pints on tap, and it was a really excellent beer. Hoppy, but not in-your-face, backed with a solid malt bill and some nice rye spiciness. From their...

    Bayou Classic Stainless 15.5g Kettle

I disagree. It's a moderate quality pot at best, but I direct fire mine and haven't had any discernible problems. My complaints are: High boil-off rate (~2gal/hr) due to the wide mouth. Handles are flimsy. I wouldn't dare try to pick it up with 10 gallons of hot liquid in it, even to just set...

Brew Log - Amarillo Pale Ale, or something

Chillin'. Only faucet in the house that will accept a garden hose adapter right now is the downstairs bathroom. You can see my modified 25' immersion chiller peeking out of the brew kettle. I soldered on some extensions so the copper loops up and out of the kettle. This was the a great...

Brew Log - Amarillo Pale Ale, or something

Here's my latest brew, grain to glass. This is my Frozen Yeast beer. It's the base midwest kit, but I wanted to experiment a bit, so I grabbed an extra 2oz of amarillo hops. 10 lbs. US 2-Row 8 oz. Carapils 8 oz. Caramel 60L 1oz Amarillo FWH 1/2 oz. Columbus 60 minutes 1oz Amarillo 20...

ordering live yeast in the mail

White labs or Wyeast? if it's a Wyeast pack you at leave have some indication ahead of time of viability based on the pack swelling. If you ordered a White Labs vial, or the smack pack seems a big sluggish, make a starter with it. Even if it arrives a little frozen, you should be fine.

    Wow lots of Krausen

Looks great! It's always exciting to see happy yeast. Both times I've pitched Wyeast 1332 I've had this. The first time I thought my 5g batch was going to blow out of a 6.5 gallon carboy. I'd never seen krausen like that. It, too, was a storm in a bottle :mug:

Trappist Yeast: krausen hasn't dropped in 2 weeks???

Have you pulled a sample and checked the gravity?

Liquid yeast froze but the bag still inflated

Just had this happen to me. Thread here. Are you brewing today? If you have time, I'd recommend making a starter with it just to increase the cell count.

Second AG batch in the Fermenter....

Sounds like you're on the right track, you just need to get the overall volume right for your equipment. Beersmith is great for a lot of things, but the boiloff calcs (there's mention of this in that thread I linked) aren't so awesome (ymmv). I'd much rather sparge with a bit more water than...

Second AG batch in the Fermenter....

I have a two-gallon boiloff, depending on relative humidity and how cold my garage is. You might find the responses in the thread I started helpful. I just did my fourth batch and hit all my numbers (including post-boil volume) right on. It isn't necessarily a bad thing, just something you have...

    So, my yeast froze.

Thought I'd post a reply for anyone interested. I decanted and pitched about 4 hours ago. Here's the results: About an hour after pitching there were some yeast rafts on the surface, and I just peeked in one last time to find a krausen starting to form :rockin: I'm pleasantly...

    So, my yeast froze.

Here's the results 24 hours after pitching into the starter. I don't think it's completely done yet, so I gave it a swirl and got everything back up into suspension. We'll see what it looks like tonight when I get home from work.

    Where to get "Stubby" bottles?

    Drink more Sierra Nevada :mug:

    So, my yeast froze.

I was hoping they'd send one, but I called last night and they said they'd do so only if the pack didn't swell, but if it did, make a starter and it should be fine. I made a 1.5L starter this morning (the pack had swelled fully by the time I got up this a.m) and it's happily fermenting. I'm not...

    So, my yeast froze.

I'm a little surprised: the pack is actually making a halfhearted attempt at swelling. I busted the inner pouch after 8 , so we're at just under 3 hours. IIRC it'd normally be a near-burst inflation levels by now, and it's probably half that :drunk:

    So, my yeast froze.

lol, no, that was the problem actually. Normally my midwest orders are at my office the morning after I get a tracking number. The interstate was closed between here and Saint Paul, so my shipment sat in a 0°F Truck for 3 whole days.

    So, my yeast froze.

We were supposed to host a New Years party last week, which didn't pan out due to the Snowpocalypse that hit the upper central midwest. I figured Sunday would be a good day to brew, so Tuesday morning I put in an order to Midwest for some odds and ends and their Amarillo Pale ale kit that I'm...

    Help lowering boil-off rates

I'm using beersmith. I'll up the boiloff rate to what I've been seeing over these last couple batches and see how I come out on the next batch. I wasn't sure if I was doing something wrong of it boiloff just is what it is for a given setup. I guess this higher rate isn't as uncommon as I thought...
