Using Jolly Ranchers instead of Carb Drops

Yeah, I added one candy to each bottle. They all completely dissolved. There was no gunk on the bottom or anything like that. Like I said, It worked pretty well. But, I think somewhere between one and two candies per bottle would yeild a better result. Maybe melt the proper amount for the batch...

Using Jolly Ranchers instead of Carb Drops

Yeah. I did it. It worked... I added one Jolly Rancher per bottle to an American wheat beer. It added a noticeable amount of flavor for this style. It was a little under carbed. I might find a way to use one and a half candies per bottle next time. Anyway, it worked pretty well. I only did five...

    Scrubbing Aluminum

Quick question- I just scrubbed the bottom of my aluminum brew pot with regular dish washing liquid, water, and a Scotch Brite sponge, and the water turned black. Should I be concerned about this?

Bottle washing: by hand or dishwasher?

Here's what I do. It's probably overkill and it takes a long time, but it's easy. And it works. 1. Rinse your bottles immediately after every use (both commercial and homebrew). 2. Soak the bottles in warm PBW or Oxyclean solution for an hour or two. (labels will fall off at this point if...

    1st brew today...question...

You can do it either way. I would probably smack it and let it inflate while you brew. But it doesn't really matter, honestly.

Should I buy a carboy or a keg?

Yeah. I want to use the keg as a secondary. I was hoping I could somehow seal it with an airlock. I've never actually seen a corny keg in person, so I wasn't sure if it could be done.

Should I buy a carboy or a keg?

I'm shopping for another secondary fermenter. I plan on getting into kegging sometime this year. So, I was thinking about getting a used corny keg instead of another 5 gallon carboy. They're roughly the same price. And it will be one less thing I'll have to buy later. I'll have no CO2 tank or...

Using Jolly Ranchers instead of Carb Drops

I plan on making some fruit flavored wheat beers to be ready this summer. I made a watermelon wheat last year using Brewers Best Watermelon extract. It turned out pretty well, considering it was my second brew. An idea hit me last weekend while using the Coopers Carb Drops. They're pretty...

Oops... I used Comet on my Aluminum brewpot

Yeah... I'm usually more cautious than this. I let my aluminum brewpot soak for an hour or two with hot water and Comet. You know Comet, it's that powdery cleaner that comes in the green canister. The one that says "Don't use on aluminum." Anyway, now I have these dark gray splotches on the...

    Help with my "Ranger-inspired" IPA

Is there a link to the recipe? I'd like to see it... I'm actually drinking my ranger recipe right now. It turned out really well. I can't think of anything I would change, except maybe a lil more dry hop. My recipe doesn't have an overpowering grapefruit character.

    My beers taste like yeast

Yeah, I try to leave that yeast layer behind in the bottle when I pour. I'll try 4 weeks in the primary. Typically, I do 3 weeks. I'll start moving the fermenter into my garage for the last week during the winter. It's worth a try. Thanks.

    Pumpkin Brew

At least it didn't break in your kettle. Hey, maybe you should have kept a sample of wort aside to check the OG at a later time, after you had the chance to buy a new hydrometer.

    My beers taste like yeast

I have 6 or 7 brews under my belt. Mostly amber or pale ales, mostly using Wyeast 1056 or Safale 05. Mostly using ingredients kits from Northern Brewer. There are several variations among these brews, but they all have one thing in common. An apparent yeasty flavor. Like, if you have ever...

    Pumpkin Beer Question

Here's what I did with my pumpkin ale: I used 2 small pumpkins cut in half, seeds scooped out. Roast in oven at 350 for 30 mins. Then peel, and cut into chunks. I put the pumpkin chunks in a grain bag and put it in the mash. But honestly I don't think it matters what you do, the pumpkin does...

thoughts on racking to secondary this weekend. to soon?

You could rack, but I would leave it in another week.

My IPA What do you think?

I was thinking of maybe dropping my bittering hops from 1.5 to 1 oz. That would bring me down to 84 IBU's.

My IPA What do you think?

Yeah, Ranger's bottle says 70 IBU's, I believe. I do have some US-05, at the bottom of a primary fermenter for a Pumpkin Ale I'm making. I wasn't planning on going through the trouble of harvesting that, unless I have to. Is it too late to make a starter for tomorrow morning?

My IPA What do you think?

I have everything cleaned, and ready to brew my IPA tomorrow morning. All I need to do is measure out my ingredients. This is my first brew that is not an ingredients kit. So, I have a few concerns, and I'm seeking advice. This is a recipe inspired by New Belgium's Ranger IPA. Check it out: 5...
