yeast cake on top and bottom

I forgot to say what type it was. White labs East Coast Ale 008. Used a starter. Starter was Laaglander Dme. But that starter sat in the fridge, Like a refridgerated starter on ice. The fermentation was at least 2 1/2 weeks long. Kind of strange, I guess. But it is winter and not exactly...

yeast cake on top and bottom

Has anyone else seen this B4? When i racked to the secondary, there was a sturdy yeast cake on the top. It was greyish brown, had the texture of a foamy sponge and was somewhat hard to slice to get a tube down past for racking. I'm brewing a stout to go onto that cake rightnow. There was a...

    hi-malt glucose

Trying to make a cream ale... Have all my stuff that i want. Got myself a quart of hi-malt glucose(liquid). How much should a guy use, roughly for the middle of the road mouthfeel effect. Is a quart too much for a 5 gallon batch. I plan to use vanilla in the secondary.

    Need help on gelatin finings

well i can't resist, my delima here. I made a batch and the O.G. was 1.038 when she went into to the primary. When i racked to the secondary I did Kai's above mentioned technique. After two weeks in primary I am still sitting @ 1.020. Albiet , it is chilly in the basement, I moved the...

    Gravity/ fermentation problem

I don't have a temp. gauge on the carbouy, but it is quite chilly in the basement. I did move the carbouy over to between the furnace and the hot water tank to see if that changes anything. I don't want to add more yeast... I checked palmer's temp. correction chart, but I think I need to get...

    Gravity/ fermentation problem

I have a batch in the secondary. I used WL008 East coast ale. Primary for 7 days and it seemed like it was finished. So i racked to secondary and when i racked, i used my hydrometer and found that it was only @ 1.020. The original gravity was 1.038. After two weeks in the secondary it is...

    Convection, stirring and stainless steel

If you are looking for a way to get more heat for a quicker boil, I would lean towards a Blend of oxygen/ propane. But for god's sake use a regulator on the O2. Set for about 4 P.S.I of outlet press to main gas line. Propane has a heating quantity of 2500 btu's / cubic ft. And as a general...

    Hop Bags?

I use the pellets and just let them fly freely in the boil, as I think that they should. Getting the full effect of the oils. The way I finish is, I put my wort chiller in the kettle and let that run for say 20 min. until 75* ish. The whole time, not stirring or disturbing the crud on the...

    gelatin

went grocery shopping tonight and got the Knox Brand gellatin. Just wondering what effect this has on the yeast? Does it somewhat affect the yeast, cause we still have yeast that continues on even after the secondary into the bottles?? But I am very excited about getting a...

    Rousing yeast

I've brewed three batches with nottingham. The first one i just pitched the dry yeast right on top of the primary and had a slow start, but good fermentation. The next one i made had some barely and a 750 gram of liquid honey jar added in the wort. I thought that the lid was going to blow...

Tripled my yeast vile. 3 Starters @ once

well I intend to use those other 2 starters in the fridge. Especially for me, because I honestly can't get any liquid yeast in my area whatsoever. I thought of ordering like 3 or 4 vials via internet, but then $$$ are getting up there. I think that they should be just fine, as long as the...

Tripled my yeast vile. 3 Starters @ once

I read this some where a while ago here. And i thought what a brilliant idea. I boiled 3 pints of water + .75lb DME and poured that into three large bottles equally. Then i poured the vial of white labs liquid yeast into the 3 bottles with equal porportions. Capped two for later(let them sit...

    Malted Wheat?

That explains alot. I use that pink sanitizer on everything when i brew. And I also use it to Sanitize my bottles just before the beer goes in. But i do rinse the heck out of the bottles with water as hot as i can get it. and then i rinse them again while the are still hanging on the botle...

Strange stuff on top of secondary

So as I was racking from my secondary into my Bottling bucket, I noticed a layer of stuff on top of my brew in the secondary. What really freaked me out was when I first noticed it it looked GREEN! Then i realized that it was probably just the flourescent tube lighting. I guess I would...

    Strange Looking Trub

I racked to my secondary today and seen a very strange trub. This was the first time that i used Irish Moss in my boil and i think that this may be why. The Trub had this Balled-Up looking, kind of co-agulated, pebbley, cottage cheese consistancy. Clearly Balled-Up form. Sorry No Pic's But...

    Help! Grain bag broke!

One time I used one of my wife's Knee-High pantyhose for a steep. It worked awesome. Put all my grains in a wide mouth mason jar, wrapped the panty hose around the lid and turned it over to let the grains slide into the jar. Then I tied it off and steeped away. Worked like a charm!
