    Electric Mashtun heating

I've been trying to figure out a good way of doing step mashes for a long time. Adding hot water works but is in my opinion troublesome. I brew with electricity and and indoors so i cant direct fire. Putting an element in my mash is also a no go obviously do to scorching. So im going to build a...

    2HL/1.7BBL Kettle/MT

I scored a 120 gallon stainless water tank from the scrap yard today, its dented but nothing i cant hammer out. Im going to cut it in two to make a Boil kettle and Mash tun. Im interested in 20 gallon batches for now. Long term id like to be able to do 200 liter batches, which would...

    New mash paddle

Todays project was to make a new mash paddle that was long enough that i can get the bottom of my MT without burning my hands. Here it is. Im gonna square off the business end, but im not sure how wide i want it. Im wondering if anyone has some dimensions handy of their paddle and if they like it.

    Cali lager

I did a beer on cali lager, and its at 1.015 after 10 days. I know this yeast isnt the highest attenuating so i went the extra mile to make the wort fermentable. Same mashing procedure has yielded 1.006. Is this yeast just that low of attenuation? I want to use it tommorow on a batch, but i dont...

New False bottom and kettle drain

Just about finished some upgrades on my system, figured id show my hard work off. My best estimate is I drilled at least 3k holes for the false bottom. I had to grind off the burs and then drill them all again to clean them out. Needless to say iv learned my lesson and wont be doing it again haha.

    CFC/HERMs material dilema

Im getting ready to add a HERMS coil to my HTL and redo my wort chiller and I cant decide if i should use stainless or copper. I know stainless doesnt conduct as well, but im not sure that matters with moving fluids and thin walls. Id like to use stainless because it's easy to clean and i hate...

    Diversol

I left my blowoff tubes on the carboys when i put my 2 week old beer in the keezer to coldcrash I usually use airlocks but im aging alot of beer atm. I used a fair amount of line but the carboys sucked up the fairly week solution of diversol, basicly emptied the half full 1 liter container into...

    Electric brewing

I found some 4500 watt elements locally for 12.50. Iv done some rough calculations and the heating times for 10 gallon AG brewing is acceptable. Using hotwater from the tap, 10 minutes to get my mash water, 20 for sparge, 25 to go from 70C to boiling. Again its very rough, im figuring a 30% heat...

    Stuck mash disaster

I grossly underestimated the amount of debris that makes it through the false bottom of my mash tun. I figured id clean up my wort a bit by putting some screen just above the outlet, its 2 inches in diameter so i didnt think it would hurt it. Boy was i wrong.....i had to completely empty my...

    Tannins?

I did a 10lb pale 1lb cara-pils brew today, my mash temp was a bit high 71C but i figured it wasnt the end of the world so i left it. My efficiencies have been kinda low 60% ish, i know my crusher is mostly to blame but i tried a couple new things with my mash. I fly sparged as usual till i...

    wort for yeast starter

I dont have access to DME for use in yeast starters, but i really want to start doing yeast starters from yeast that iv harvested. So i collected about 2 gallons of end runnings from an AG brew i did yesturday. Its pretty weak so im boiling it down and iv put a couple cups of dextrose in. I plan...

    2 day fermentation lag

Did a brew on monday night, and now nearly two days after pitching its just barely starting to bubble and produce krausen. Its a blackrock Stout + lager +6lbs organic gabrius 2row, so we used two packets of the blackrock yeast. Im not surprised its taken so long to do anything, blackrocks yeast...
