    Braided Hose

So, I have a 3/4-inch stainless steel braided hose for a water heater. I cut off both ends with a hacksaw and inside is a thick walled white plastic tubing. It does not come out or move for that matter. How is it that you all have been able to remove this from the stainless steel?

    crushed grains

I'e had 10lbs of crushed grains in my 58 to 60 degree basement for about two months now. They are in the original sealed bag from austin homebrew, not vacuum sealed but sealed. are they still good? I realize that they wont be fresh, but can I still make a decent pale ale out of them?

    Brass or Stainless

Somewhere i remember reading not to use brass fittings in a mash/lauter tun. Does this really matter whether I use a brass ball valve instead of a stainless steel ball valve in my mash/lauter tun? I am in the process of converting a coleman exreme rectangular cooler into an all-grain brewing...

    starter didn't start

Interesting. I have made them before with no problems. I made a one liter starter last night with 1 cup DME. i cooled the wort down, oxygenated it, then tossed in the yeast about 9pm. This morning, there was still negative pressure inside the airlock, and no signs of fermentation at all...

    cooler conversion question

I am having trouble figuring out how to remove the valve/spigot on my new Coleman Exreme 36 quart cooler. I am turning it, but the whole thing just turns in circles. Any advice on the best way to remove? I want to install one of those bulk-head fittings on it instead of the existing...

    Choices, choices......

I made a one liter starter last friday night but then life got in the way and I was not able to brew on Sunday as planned. So I have left the starter in the closet and it has fermented out nicely. It's been in there for one week. I plan on brewing this sunday. I can go three ways as I see...

    4 year old Iodophor

I found a half bottle of Iodophor in my basement. It is about 4 to 5 years old. Anybody know if this stuff goes bad or any reason why I should not use it to sanitize equipment?

    Round or Rectangular

I am asking for a cooler from Santa Claus this holiday season. I plan on batch sparging b/c it seems easiest and simplest. It will be of the 10 gallon variety in case I do some larger grain bills; although I suspect for 90% of my beers, a 5-gallon cooler would be fine. Probably will use...

    yeast

Made a very successful yeast starter this past sunday :ban: Given what I witnessed as the best primary fermentation I have ever seen, i will be making starters in the future. :rockin: Question: For my next batch, If I open up a White Labs yeast container, shake, and pitch half in a...

    First Wine Attemp

I am going to give wine a shot :) I have ordered beer supplies from Austin Homebrew shop in the past and like them. They offer a lot of wine kits. Which brand kits should I get? I don't necessarily want to get the most basic kits like a beginner might b/c I do have brewing experience...

    yeast starter - hot break?

I am making my first yeast starter, in a flask on the stove, one liter water, 1 cup DME. Boil for 15 minutes, cool, pitch yeast into starter. i plan on pitching the entire thing into a 5 gallon batch of wort on Sunday. Does it matter that I will be pitching the hot break from the starter...

    67 degree Fermentation

My first brew in quite a while. i want to ferment in my basement. Pretty consistantly 67 to 68 degrees down there. I am making an American Pale Ale and using White Labs California Ale yeast. Is this too cold? In the winter, the basement gets down to 63 degrees or so. Is that too cold for...

    2-row/crystal steep

I received an Extract w/grain kit for a Pale Ale from Austin Homebrew. 7lbs of LME and 1/2 pound each of crystal 60L and American 2-row. What's the best way to steep this. Normally I would "tea bag" it in 155 degree water for 45 minutes. What is throwing me off though is the addition of...

Tips on Sanitizing Lid on Primary

I've done it various ways including pouring iodophor or bleach solution that I used to sanitize primary bucket onto the lid several times. I just never feel comfortable about it b/c it is difficult to keep all parts of lid in contact with solution for very long. any tips/ideas would be...
