Amateur Brewer Experienced Drinker in Middle Tn.

Welcome to the board as well of Middle Tennessee. I know there is a local home brew store (LHBS) in Murfreesboro, but I have never been there. I use All Seasons which is in downtown Nashville. Great people and very helpful. Check out http://antiochsudsuckers.com/bb/ It is a local group...

    Dry Hopping Questions

If you are looking to cut back a bit, I would drop one or both of the cascade/Chinook additions. You should get most of the benefits from the dryhopping that you would by boiling them a short period of time. I once did a 200 IBU IPA and it did smack you up front with bitterness, but I too am...

    My ESB finishes too bitter!

:off: Bigben, how is your yuengling lager? I tried one this past winter and it was good, but it was not anything like yuengling. I would like to see your recipe if you don't mind.

    flat ipa

I read the message boards before I jumped in and began brewing. My first kit was an IPA, with steeping grains and I bought an extra ounce of hops to dry hop. I was amazed at how much like beer my first brew was. I do all grain now and will say if you like a hoppy IPA, dry hop the heck out of it...

    Summit Hops and Promash

It won't be 100% accurate, but you could clone Amarillo or Cascade and change the AA %. http://www.brew365.com/hops_summit.php The link above gives a good description of the hop.

    dead bee in primary

Flies are my problem on brew day. They just love sweet wort. I fished out a couple from my Flying Dog clone boil yesterday. It is not the first time and my beers have come out fine.

Recipe for Flying Dog Classic Pale Ale ?

    Kegs, Kegs, Kegs

I believe this thread is referring to kegs that are converted into kettles. These types of kegs are the property of the brewing company and it is illegal to acquire them without their permission. The corny kegs you purchase would not be illegal.

    Irish Red Recipe

Here is the recipe for my irish red. It was very tasty. The base malt was Maris Otter. Irish Red A ProMash Recipe Report BJCP Style and Style Guidelines ------------------------------- 09-D Scottish And Irish Ale, Irish Red Ale Min OG: 1.044 Max OG: 1.060 Min IBU: 17...

    Overly Bitter IPA

Just a side note on Cascade hops. Last weekend I brewed an all Cascade PA. The alpha units were 7.8%!, extremely high for cascade in my opinion. I adjusted my recipe by eliminating one full ounce to achieve the same IBU based on 5.8%, which is what I had purchased just a month ago. I have had...

"Barley Crusher" Grain Mill, Anyone own one of these?

http://www.barleycrusher.com There is this new site out there called Google, it is a wonderful thing :cross: This may be my next purchase for my brewery. Got to get it approved by the SWMBO.

How long to brew an all-grain batch?

4 - 4.5 hours on average. I do not crush my own grain yet, so that is already done for me by the LHBS.

    All cascade?

I did an all Cascade pale ale (about 1.056 OG) that had 2 oz whole leaf at 60 minutes. 1 oz at 30 minutes and 1 oz at 15 minutes. I dry hopped with 2 ozs for 14 days. It was very tasty.

Irish Stout Ode To Arthur, Irish Stout (Guinness Clone)

I brewed one similar to this. I made one error though. I scaled a 10 gallon recipe down to 5 gallon. At the last minute I decided to add the acid malt. I put the full .25 lb in. I am hoping it is not too sour. It did not taste bad after the boil, so I will see. I racked onto a Safale 04...

    I'm gonna quit

Good for you. I quit just over 10 years ago and have only smoked an occasional cigar. I went the chewing gum route (my jaw was killing me after 2 days, but I toughed it out :) ) Stick with it, you won't regret it.
