Low Post-Boil Volume / Higher OG Question

My post boil volume yesterday for a 5 gallon batch was around 4.5 gallons, and my OG was 1.080, instead of the 1.072 target as listed on my recipe directions. I sparged with the amount of water the recipe instructions called for, so I think the reason for this is because my boil pot is 15...

    First Lowsy-Tasting Batch!

I recently brewed the AHS IPA, the kit. Everything went well, but I wasn't happy with the amount of hops in the kit, only because my last two brews were very hoppy IPA's. I wanted to try something different, so I ordered the kit. Being the experimentive type, without without asking for...

Hopsdirect.com; Do they sell simcoe hops?

Sorry, but anyone know if they do? Is it a seasonal thing?

IIPA Still Fermenting After 3.5 Weeks

My IIPA is still fermenting after 3.5 wks. The problem is: It is dryhopped and the hops are not settling out yet, still very murky. Has any had this problem? What should I do about it, because I was hoping to keg it up in the next few days, but how can I with all that activity?

    Shelf Life For Hoppy Beers?

My last double IPA was dry hopped for ten days, tasted fantastic for about two weeks in the keg. By the end of the third week, it was very bitter, sour, and acidic tasting. I must tell you that this batch was really incredible! I have never tasted anything so good. By the end of the third...

    First All-Grain Results

My Pliny clone has now been in the keg for two weeks. I had the CO2 pressure a little high, but when I noticed how fast it was carbing, I turned it down some, but still left it around 15 pounds pressure to speed up the process. Over the past week, it carbed up perfectly, but the head size...

    10 Days versus 14 Days

Will it make much difference if I do a ten day instead of a 14 day dry hop?

    Update On My Pliny Brew

My first all-grain! I brewed this 9 days ago, made a nice yeast starter and it fermented actively for about 7 days. This is now day nine and it is slowing down to a bubble every 15 to 20 seconds. Everything went pretty much by the book, hit all my temps, etc. My OG was 1.079. There are...

Day 5 and still Active Fermentation

I brewed Pliny the Elder Clone last Thursday and it is still fermenting vigorously. The carboy is still churning away. Anyway, after five days, the blow-off tube is still bubbling at 1-2 second intervals. The reason it is doing so well is because I use a yeast starter that I ramped up 2...

I Have Pliny The Elder Brewing Questions

I am brewing Pliny: Questions: 1.) If I am using a 10 gallon cooler for the mash, what should my strike water temp be for the 60 minute mash so my mash is at 150 - 155? 2.) What should my strike water temp be prior to the 10 minute mash so temp is around 175? 3.) I am using 14 lbs...

    Ballast Point Sculpin IPA News

I was at their brewery last week and they told me they will soon be bottling up their Sculpin IPA in 12oz. bottles. I was happy hear about that!

    I Have To Rant!

I am very new to home brewing, but I have been doing alot of research over the past few months. I live in San Diego, and we have what appears to be only two decent options for Home Brew Stores. I quickly discovered that not only were their prices much higher than online stores, but their stock...

    Preparing For AG Brewing

Hi, I have a few questions for my first AG brew, which will be a Stone Ruination clone, as follows: Recipe Type: All Grain Yeast: Pacman Yeast Starter: Maybe, what do you'all think? Batch Size (Gallons): 5.00 Original Gravity: 1.077 Final Gravity: 1.013 IBU: 103+ Boiling Time...

    Blichmann Burner

Fedex delivered my Blichmann Burner today. First impressions: WOW! This thing is massive, almost 30 Lbs of steel. Pictures just don't do this burner justice at all. The stainless steel fixture for the burner is heavy gauge, very well-constructed. I just can't wait to try it out! My Heavy...

    MoreBeer Heavy Duty Brew Kettles

I was looking at these kettles and noticed that they do not have a 10 gallon kettle, just an 8 gallon and a 15 gallon which struck me as very odd, considering their brew sculptures are designed for 10 and 20 gallon kettles. Anyone know why they don't offer a 10 gallon kettle? I realize that an...

    Question About My CFC

I recently made a 20ft CFC from Home Depot Supplies. I gave it a test run with boiling hot water to see what the temperature would be coming out the other end. The result was a 70F output. I live in southern California, so my tap water wasn't very cold, but it appears to be a successful CFC...

    Cleaning Carboy

I found a 5 gallon glass carboy that is difficult to clean with a brush. There is a scale or deposit inside. Is there something strong I might use to loosen it enough to use a brush? Otherwise, I may have to trash it.

    Question About My Strong IPA

I brewed a strong IPA about 5 to 6 wks ago. At this point I am not sure if it is too soon to keg, carb, and drink. The fermentation stopped at a FG of 1.025, stayed that way for a couple weeks, so I know that is all I could expect from this. This batch is a higher alcohol brew, my first one...
