    2 beers from one mash?

Hi everyone, I'm going to be brewing a barleywine next weekend and am wondering if I can re-use the grain after collecting the barleywine wort? Do you think it would have enough remaining sugars to make an ordinary bitter? I'll be collecting 7 gallons of barleywine wort for the pre-boil...

    Healthy Fermentation?

Hello all! I spent 12 hours yesterday dealing with a stuck mash. Finally got the beer into fermenter around 9:30 last night. Checked it at around 7:00 am this morning and things were happy. Came home tonight around 7:30 and found it had blown the top. See pics. How do I save this beer? Please...

Ale Pail inside 10 gallon cooler?

Does anyone know if a 6.5 gallon Ale Pail will fit inside a 10 gallon orange Gott/Rubbermaid cooler? Would this be a good option for keeping the fermenter cool during summer months? If so, how does one go about it? Can you just put in ice bottles or do you have to fill it with ice water...

How much grain is usually needed for a partial mash? 25%, 50%, 75%? Is there a minimum?

10 Gallon Brewpot or 10 Gallon mash tun?

I'm migrating from extract to all-grain and was wondering if it would be better to buy the 10 gallon brewpot or the 10 gallon cooler for a mash tun first. Any suggestions? I currently brew outside on a cajun cooker with a five gallon pot. I don't have the money to buy the pot and the cooler...

    Imperial stout sweeter than expected

I recently brewed a northcoast old Rasputin clone and I thought it turned out pretty good. Today I'm trying a bottle of the real thing and I notice that it has a much dryer finish than my clone. Any ideas as to why? My extract clone was from the BYO 250 clones issue. I had an S.G. of 1.09 and a...

    Irish Red Grain Bill

The next brew on the list is going to be an Irish Red. I plan on using Marris Otter for the base malt and then some roasted barley for a specialty grain. I see from other threads that a lot of people use caramel/crystal malts as well. Is this necessary for an Irish Red? What does it add to...

    C.r.a.b.s.

Is anyone on here a member of the Chesapeake real ale brewers society? I saw there is a meeting tomorrow at the MD homebrew store and was thinking of coming by and joining up. What's the usual meeting like? How much beer do people usually bring?

    Starting Gravity a bit high?

Hi everyone, I brewed my first batch using my very own made up recipe (8th batch overall). I think I may have gotten something wrong because my starting gravity diluted to 5 gallons was around 1.060. Here's the recipe: 1.90# pilsner malt 1.90# white wheat malt 0.75# flaked oats...

    Head disappears when cold

Hi everyone, I recently brewed a Old Rasputin clone and have had the beer bottled for about 3 weeks now. If I pull a bottle out of the pantry at about 67 degrees and put it straight into a pint glass then I get about an inch of head on the beer. It disappears fairly quick but that's no...

    Brew #1 in the bottle!!!

Well, I bottled my first batch tonight, a Brewer's Best Scottish Ale. Everything seemed to go fairly well but I only got 47.5 bottles out of the batch. I would've gotten 48 if I hadn't taken a sample for measuring with the hydrometer. But it did taste like beer! So, quick question. My SG...

    Brewer's Best Scottish Ale

Hello everyone, I'm currently working on a Brewer's Best Scottish Ale for my first brew. I was wondering if anyone else has tried this kit and, if so, what readily available commercial Scottish Ale would you compare it too? I'd like to do a side-by-side comparison between my brew and one...

    Brew #1 - Sanity Check

Hello everyone! Well, a week ago today I brewed my first home brew ever. It's a Brewer's Best Scottish Ale. The brew went off without any serious mishaps (no dogs drinking it, no thermometers breaking, no boilovers). The only "bad" part was how long it took to get boiling on my glass...

    Howdy from Elkridge, MD

Hello! I'm glad to find this forum! I brewed by first batch yesterday afternoon and have it bubbling in the bucket right now. It's a Brewer's Best Scottish Ale. It wasn't too hard to get going but I wasn't sure the water was ever going to boil. Hopefully it boiled enough! I'm sure this...
