AHS commerical brew kits observations and questions

Really, I have read that a full boil with a late extract addition will optimize the hop profile. I can see your point about messing up the developed recipe, and that was the point of my thread. Will it mess it up, will it add to it (but change the flavor away from the clone), or is it nothing to...

AHS commerical brew kits observations and questions

I have been brewing for a while, mostly brews that I have found on the interwebs, or recipes that I have generated myself with BeerSmith. My wife decided that she would get me some kits of her favorite brews to work from. She ordered me a DFH 90 min. IPA and a Lagunitas IPA kit. I was surprised...

    Freshops Crowns!

Is there any Cascade available. I planted two rhizomes of Cascade and have no sprouts. I think they are dead. I would like to re-plant, but are having problems finding Cascade rhizomes this late in the season. Any help would be highly appreciated. Dave:-)

    Epic brew day

It just dawned on me that today is National Homebrew Day. The brew gods must be smiling down on me today. And soforth I am thankful and will partake of the brews that I have brewed. Good day, good brew, good sleep...if I get to the bed. Dave:-)

If you don't plant a Cascade you're crazy

Just planted Nugget, Centennial, and Cascade, two rhizomes each. Nugget is coming up with a fury, I have a few Cent. sprouts, but Cascade is doing nothing for me. I think something dug up one of my Cascade rhizomes and spit it out as something it didn't want to eat. So I re-planted it. I so hope...

Question about putting wort into primary

You'll be fine. The paint chips or burnt sugar bits will settle to the bottom in the trub. You can rack off the top of it when you go to secondary or bottling. Dave:-)

New brew recipe for the weekend, critique wanted

It's in the carboy now. I was tickled to find that Cascade have come down in price. So Clonefarmer's recommendation of the Cascade in the hop schedule saved me some money. The brew smells awesome. I hit my target gravity and final boil volume spot on. And to make it all better my LP tank died...

    Epic brew day

Today was one of the best brew days I've ever had. I hit the LHBS for supplies just as they opened and was in and out quickly. I hit my target gravity and final boil volume dead on. It looked like rain, but didn't and I only got a little sweat in the brew pot. But the crowning jewel was when my...

New brew recipe for the weekend, critique wanted

Thanks Clonefarmer, I like your tweaks. I agree it will be better with more hops at the end, late boil and FO, added to with the DH'ing. I think that this might be the way to go. Thanks for taking the time to help me. Dave:-)

New brew recipe for the weekend, critique wanted

As the thread title says, this is my hopeful new brew recipe for this weekend. I have made several batches and think that I have the process under control. My usual general process is to find a good looking recipe, make it and then tweak it to my likin' on the second brew. Well I have grown...

Immediate help needed! I don't have a carboy cap that fits.

Serious, wrap it in Tin Foil, you will soon have more things coming out of your fermentor than can come in. RAHAHBDWAI. Dave:-)

First time hop grower, with a few questions

Thanks Spense for the affirmation. The Orchids are an anomaly that I enjoy. It seems that I have just the right pH and Pine duff to support them. They crop up everywhere, but only in the area the I want to grow my Hops. So I went above ground to deal with the pH. I would say that I could dig you...

First time hop grower, with a few questions

Hey Y'all I'm excited because I finally got my Hops planted. Due to a delay in the e-mail system from my LHBS and then some SWMBO conflicts I am finally getting my Hop rhizomes in some dirt. The only area I had to plant in was a abandoned field filled with Pine saplings. I cut them all down...

    What hops to plant?

I pick the varieties based on the beers I like to brew. I'm a hophead so I chose Cascades, Centennial , and Nugget. Just started 2 rhizomes of each in 3 containers. Looking forward to seeing them start. Dave:-)

    River of Deceit- Mad Season

I can't say I'm a fan of the band as I haven't heard much from them. But I will agree River of Deceit is a great tune. It goes right up there with a band I normally hate..Pearl Jam (too commercial) but their latest song Breathe is excellent. Am I showing my age because I like the slow/acoustic...

    Wort hog????

Thank-you that is information I haven't had. I have always considered the 60 minute hops to add bittering, due to the long boil releasing the full potential of the AA. Then the 30 minute addition was splitting the difference, releasing a good amount of AA, but also a equal amount of BA, which...

    Wort hog????

Well this brew has finished it's run. 3 weeks in the primary with a steady final gravity of 1.011. I bottled it today, and it smelled great. I tasted the last little bit that I couldn't fit in the bottles. Wow this is a bitter brew. With very little hop aroma or flavor. It's all Alpha. I...

Carboy question. 5 gal carboy for a 5 gal batch?

Use a blow-off tube and don't worry about it. A 5 gallon batch in a 5 gallon carboy will blow the top out. Go to your LHBS and ask for a 3-4' length of blow-off tube, sink it in the neck of your carboy, with the other end in a pail of water. Once your vigorous fermentation has subsided you can...

    Rye PA recipe help

OK what y'all think of this recipe, it doesn't give any gravity measurements so I will just trust it's good. The grain bill, and hop schedule sound about right. I might up the DME to match what my LHBS sells. Whatcha think... Piggish Rye IPA Total batch size = 5 gallons; Partial Mash in 3...
