PID controller setup ... for fish?!

hah, I'm actually hooking the PID controller up to a raspberry pi to monitor usage patterns. Not sure how yet, but once water temps are working, I'll get on that. the great thing about AP systems is that there are no moving parts (if you want) apart from the always on pump. I always dreamed of...

PID controller setup ... for fish?!

Thank you! I actually ended up getting this thing: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007H5GQUY/?tag=skimlinks_replacement-20 Does that operate the same way, or does it have more "intelligence"?

PID controller setup ... for fish?!

Yeah the "timing" of a PID controller is a concern, I have no idea how fast ~300 gallons of water are heated with a ~1200W element, and will it know to shut off in time? Does a PID have the intelligence to ramp up slowly and observe results in temp change, or does it go full blast, overshoot...

PID controller setup ... for fish?!

Great questions, thank you. It's tilapia, who really don't like going below 55F - I'm going to shoot for 70f throughout the texas winter. The whole system contains about 350 gallons of water that is cycled through the whole system every hour. Due to the size of the system and the fact that...

PID controller setup ... for fish?!

Ladies and Gentlemen, Long time homebrewer here, who recently got into the the fun hobby of aquaponics, a system that has a lot of similarities to electric brewing, I swear. Aquaponics is a system that combines fish farming with hydroponics, the growing of plants in a soil-less environment...

How long can beer remain healthy in a fermenter?

Due to some bad planning, I have a fermenter full of finished beer with no place to go - all my kegs are full, and will remain so for a while longer. This is a pale ale in a 7G bucket that has now been sitting about 6 weeks, but can't be kegged yet. Are there any problems of letting it sit...

First custom beer - Canuckle Sandwhich

Great job, but one huge mistake: you paid for empty bottles. Here's a little trick the pros use: you can buy bottles in beer stores and they come filled with free beer!

ABV too high - technique for "watering down" before kegging?

Genius. Thanks for all the other responses too. I wanted to test the waters for this procedure, and it seems like to cons outweigh the pros. I'll have to report my failure to my financial backers and deal with the fall out.

    Father of the Year Award

You can easily fit a plastic nipple over a can. Just a little tip.

    I grew a beard...

"Whoa check out that really manly, clean shaven guy" - Said no woman, ever Having said that, it's worth remembering that it's the beard on the inside that really matters.

    My recent Cream Ale

Use this: http://www.beerlabelizer.com/ Print the label using laser jet onto normal paper (send it to your local print shop if you don't have a laser printer) - gotta be lazer so it's waterproof (ish) stick the labels onto your bottle using MILK enjoy :)

ABV too high - technique for "watering down" before kegging?

I brewed an IPA recently and, of course noted the OG without much thinking. Today, during a routine gravity check, I noticed that my OG was 1.066 and my FG 1.012 (these are temp corrected values.) It dawned on me that 7% ABV is way higher than what I intended for this recipe (I know, first...

Debating the life of my brewing system/stand/stuff (moving to an apt and marriage)

You are asking a forum dedicated to home brewing what they would choose between their beer making equipment and getting married to a SWMBO ? It's not worth it son...

    How do you pronounce fuggles?

Bear in mind this is a british name, so although you don't need to use the accent, you will need to pronounce it with a wink and a nod, implying that you might just have made a dirty joke. Don't let on though, be subtle.

    Round 2, beer still fruity

Gravity / ABV maths questions. Do my homework for me.

I had about 2.5G left in the pot after boiling was done. I then added enough water to make 4G. The OG of those 4G was 1.067

Gravity / ABV maths questions. Do my homework for me.

Huh, what's the deal with not topping up after fermentation? This is a belgian golden ale, so there's no problems letting it go to the higher ABV, but I am curious.

Gravity / ABV maths questions. Do my homework for me.

Recently brewed a 5G recipe using a 2.5G boil volume. On finishing, I realised I didn't have the fermenter available that I thought I had. all I had available was a 5G plastic bottle. So, I decided to throw in my 2.5G of wort, and add water until reaching 4G, leaving 1G worth of head space...
