Brew Masters on Discovery w/ Sam Calagione

I thought this show would suck, but I really enjoy watching it. Sam and his crew seem genuine and the tips and tricks I pick up are great!

    So who's brewing this weekend?

Just added 8oz of Maple Syrup to my Maple Brown Ale after three days in the primary. Going to let it sit for another 3-4 weeks and then bottle!

First time selecting grains (AKA, how to use a scale...)

Went to my LHBS today (Southern Brewing in Tampa) and decided it was time to select my own grains... The guy working the counter (very helpful) helped be choose a recipe and then showed me how to find the grains. 8oz of each, no big deal I thought. After getting everything together, I take it...

    Man, I love Apfelwein

Joey - I thought about it, but I didn't have any more stuff! That's a 6.5-gallon carboy, so 5-gallons just doesn't look that impressive...

    Man, I love Apfelwein

Thanks Ed! "Assembled" this apfelwein on Saturday (4/24/10) and I plan on unveiling it on the 4th of July. Hopefully it can come around in 2 months and be great.

Need advice on bottling (used the wrong fermenting bucket?)

Well - I got everything bottled! I went with the double transfer (out of wrong bucket, into right bucket, sanitized, back into right bucket and then into the bottles)... It took FOREVER and I was scattered (first time) but everything *seemed* to go okay. So, thanks for the advice everybody...

6.5 Gallon carboy - too big? (And other silly noob primary questions)

Frodo, thanks for the quick response. To be clear, I don't plan on racking to a secondary often but I am planning a "Bourbon Barrel Porter" next and would need to rack atop some oak chips and whiskey... could I just pour this into the primary?

6.5 Gallon carboy - too big? (And other silly noob primary questions)

When I purchased my True Brew kit, I also purchased a 6.5 Gallon carboy, hoping to use that as a secondary. Now, after some reading it seems that 6.5 gallons is too big for a secondary, since it would allow 'too much oxygen/head space'? Although, the True Brew "ale pails" are 6.5 Gallons and...

Need advice on bottling (used the wrong fermenting bucket?)

Yooper - If you can't, I doubt I can! This is my first time afterall!! Should I go 2 more weeks in the bottling bucket, transfer to another bucket, clean my bottling bucket and rack back and bottle all in one afternoon?

Need advice on bottling (used the wrong fermenting bucket?)

I think I am going to wait 3 weeks (2 more) in the primary and then rack to my other bucket (the non-bottling bucket) on top of the priming solution and then auto siphon from that into the bottles (per BigB's suggestion)... Does that sound like a good plan?

Need advice on bottling (used the wrong fermenting bucket?)

Ok guys, I need your help once again! I brewed my first "real" beer the other day (as opposed to the 3 Mr. Beer brews I have already done) and, per the LHS's instructions, added the wort/yeast into my True Brew "fermenter/bucket with the hole" - which is a hole on the bottom for a...

    So who's brewing this weekend?

2.13 Gallons of "Fraggle Bock" bottled and carbing... 2.13 Gallons of "Donkey Lips Lager" in the keg and fermenting... March 13th I will move up to my first partial extract brew using all of my new equipment!

    Infection? (Pics included...n00b!)

Frodo - I did move the keg twice, which may have done exactly what you have described. I will make sure to keep it in one place this next time around and with extra sanitation, hope for better results.

    Infection? (Pics included...n00b!)

You guys are great! Funny you mention the dog - I believe it may have been from a rouge hair or something...my girlfriend took several breaks from brewing and may have touch the dog (yeah, thats right - I am passing the blame) It may have also been a sanitation issue - this was my first brew...

    Infection? (Pics included...n00b!)

Drink it quickly as in, don't let it carb/condition for too long? Or, what?

So, is mold bad?!? I didn't get it in the bottles, think it will be alright?
