I had looked into non brazed plate chillers, there was not much in the way of sizes that we would use. I had stumbled across this one which was perfect but they do not manufacturer this size anymore. I would love to see you pull this off!

I doubt you would end up with infections after the boil, the only difference I would say is that it could sour but if it was in the fridge it probably would of slowed that process. At room temp it can sour quickly, have you smelled the funk grains get that have spent much time out in room temps...

Check with a magnet, most likely anything that a magnet would not stick to would work ( brass, bronze, SS, Alum ) Maybe Just pickle them with the valve and other parts if they are gold in color.

Actually this is a Danby, it is black and stainless on the outside but white on the inside(Good for telling when it needs a cleaning). I picked it up for $80 new so I could resist at the time. I had 3 gal cornies so I was not overly concerned with the freezer compartment.

Unless you are really set on making something of your own, by the time you spend $100 on a trash can and then $ for fittings and all, for $200 you should look into one of these...
