    Boil off.

One thing I have found that I can not get consistent is the amount of Boil off (amount of water boiled away during the boil). Is there a way to determine this during the boil? My thinking: 1) check liquid levels during boil. (How) 2) temperature of the boil (does it vary) 3) amount of...

    No Measurement Brewing

So lately in my brewing I have either gotten lazy or just don't care any more about measuring anything. What I means is that I no longer take hydrometer readings, pH readings and fermenting temperatures Example last batch from GWs book, Camerons Strongarm Ale. I did weight the grain and...

    The full Aussie

Today I made a 80 /- using the full Aussie. Brew in a bag and No chill. How will the beer turn out? check back in a month. But my does it shorten the brew day, 3 hours from gear out to gear away. Would have been shorter but I went out with SWMBO during the mash. Cheers P.S. I...

    BIAB Experiment

So I have done at least a dozen BIAB so far and decided to try an experiment. One thing with BIAB is the cloudy wort so I though a filter bag would do a better job. So I bought a 1 micron filter bag from an environmental firm I know for $20. Bag size 24" wide by 30" long. So I made my...

Rubber gasket in Fermenting Bucket Warning

I just got my first infection after three years of brewing. The culprit was the rubber gasket in the lid of the fermenting bucket. I have super sanitized everything and have thrown away the rubber gasket and have no intention of buying a new one. The question is except to form an air...

    Introducing Fermentation in a bag.

All righty then. As an adjunct to Brew in a Bag (BIAB) I now offer Ferment in a Bag (FIAB). This is not my idea I saw in a U brew place many years ago, so on a kit stout I tried it, worked fantastic with zero, and I mean zero clean up. Equipment 1) A ~30L food grade LDPE plastic bag, I...

    Where to add brewing salts

Okay I did a search but could not find an answer. I add my brewing salts (CaSo4 and MgSO4) to my grain so that it gets dissolved when I do my mash. Is this wrong?, Should I add the salts to my water as I heat it up for the mash. Or is this a six of one half dozen of the other. Cheers!
