    Brewing temperature questions

I have had a few beers ferment in the 70s and they really did not turn out bad at all. 68 seems to be the average number people shoot for so the quicker you can get it down around there and keep it there the better. RDWHAHB your beer is still going to be great and even if it isn't perfect it...

How many gallons of homebrew in 2010?

5 gallons good old American Amber Ale brings the total to... 15629.6 gal

    5 vs. 6 gallons

I'm sure the beer will turn out great, but it will be a completely different beer than was intended. Your gravity will be exactly 20% higher than the kit intended, which if I'm not mistaken will also have an effect on the perceived bitterness. The overall flavor profile of the beer will be...

    BeerSmith Mash Out question

In the first option you add the 1.6 gallon then drain, then you add the 3.33 and drain again. In the second option you drain first, then add the 4.93 gallons and drain again. The key difference between the two techniques is simply draining the mash and collecting the initial running right after...

I knew Aeration Equipment is a Waste of $...

remilard, I don't think I drew any conclusions but please elaborate... I was thinking of adding a poll for this thread just for a goof...What shoudl the options be: How do you aerate your wort? 1.)Shake carboy? 2.) Air-stone no O2 system 3.) Air-stone + O2 system 4.)? 5.)Don't aerate Give...

I knew Aeration Equipment is a Waste of $...

This experiment is not much different than what a big corp would do, it's just that the big corps have access to 8th grade science equipment, this guy only had access to 6th grade equipment apparently. You have to understand though that this experiment was not designed to be entirely conclusive...

    April Fools Prank

LMFAO, not only is the prank hilarious, totally something I would do, but you used a hobby knife to cut out frosting as if it was some sort of precision surgery lol. Don't know why but that made me chuckle. Kudos on the prank though, let us know how it went over.

I knew Aeration Equipment is a Waste of $...

So uh, back to the topic here...the whole point is whether or not, based on this study or other studies you've read or conducted yourself or whatever, do you guys think aeration equipment is really worth the investment. The study, like I mentioned in my OP, seems to be more appropriate for the...

    Liquor in secondary

Theoretically the alcohol in the spirit should have the same effect as using sanitation fluid in the airlock whereby lessening the chance that any harmful organism can get into the beer. So in other words just in case some of the airlock fluid gets into the beer it won't infect it.

    Sucrose yeast for fermenting beer?

I don't have any experience with this yeast but from what it looks like it is for making liquor such as cordials. I'm not sure how it will work with beer. How high of a gravity are you going for? 1.070...more? White labs makes a high gravity beer yeast capable of handling 12-16% ABV. It says it...

    Dry hopping a lager

I read, I believe in a recent issue of BYO, that dry hopping is best done at warm fermentation temperatures 60-65F.

I knew Aeration Equipment is a Waste of $...

I read this study a while back and thought it might be interesting to share it here with HBT. This is not my work at all and I take no credit for anthing other than posting it here for you fine brewers to read.It is just something I found interesting when doing some research. Check it out and...

    Successful Dry Hopping Techniques?

I just tried my first attempt at dry hopping with a rainy day IPA I brewed last week. I simply cut a grain sock down to an appropriate size, threw in 2 sanitized stainless steel washers I had, and added the 1 oz of Fuggles and .25oz of Warrior I had left over, I used pellet hops and that is why...

    Body Harvest Ale!?

yeah these are the reactions I was expecting. It might spark a little curiosity but it sound like your just asking to make infected beer. I mean we are so anal about sanitation, not touching anything to the wort that is unsanitary, not sucking on the siphon tube to get a siphon started etc...I'm...

    Body Harvest Ale!?

Brewers are constantly pushing the envelope with crazy new techniques but just when you think brewing technique can't get any more eccentric, someone proposes an idea so radical it practically blows your mind. I just finished reading the most recent issue of Zymurgy, and Charlie Papazian just...
