    Beersmith- water calculation problems

I brewed an IPA on Monday and had issues with my water volumes post mash and post boil. In both instances I was very low. I have not had this issue in the past. Used the Northern Brewer Dead Ringer IPA recipe. All grain. 12 Lbs of malt I use a 10 gallon Igloo cooler for my mash tun and...

Megapot with weldless ball valve and brewmometer leaking

Thanks Mark, i could have sworn that the instructions with the brewmometer showed the o-ring on the inside of the pot. I will have to look closer when I get home today. Dougbot- I went over to Northern Brewer and talked to one of the guys there. You will need to put teflon tape on the threads...

Megapot with weldless ball valve and brewmometer leaking

Not sure, I will look tonight. I will give NB a call and see if they can trouble shoot with me. The thermometer is a blichman brewmometer and they expressly say to not use teflon tape. There was no teflon ring with either assembly only silcon Orings Thanks for your help!

Megapot with weldless ball valve and brewmometer leaking

I did not add any teflon tape to the assembly. I am at work right now so I dont have access to my kettle. Does the ball valve assembly come with teflon tape on the threads between the lock nut and the actual assembly. If not I suppose this would take care of my problem. The Thermometer says...

Megapot with weldless ball valve and brewmometer leaking

I did a quick search and didn't find anything on this which makes me feel even sillier. I got a 10 gallon Megapot from NB for Christmas and when I went to install the weldless Ball valve and the brewmometer they both leaked. The ball valve and assembly came with two o rings. The seal is...

    Recipe Copyrights?

Thanks for all the info everyone! Let me throw this one out there, and I will use coke as an example because I have heard the crazy stories of how they protect their recipe. Feel free to substitute the word Coke with your favorite beer for relevancy. So I could formulate a product that tastes...

    Recipe Copyrights?

I was thinking the other day about the legality of using a similar recipe (clone recipe) as your own. Do breweries copyright their recipes? With a fairly structured style guideline for each beer, wouldn't it be possible for a brewer to stumble upon a already created recipe by chance? I would...

    Russian Imperial Stout

How about some Malto Dextrin to get a nice thick mouthfeel? Just a thought!

    Pliny substitute in WI?

Bells Hopslam in my opinion is a better DIPA. Although when you get a chance try a nice fresh Pliny. Its a fine beer!

    World's most expensive beer

I've never had The End of History, but I had a bottle of Sink The Bismarck (44% ABV) from Brewdog a few weeks back. $130.00 a bottle and its smaller than a 750mL. Tasted like a nice scotch. Burnt all the way down. It was fun to try but in no way was it a good beer in my opinion. You can...

Spice, Herb, or Vegetable Beer Cocoa Cayenne Porter

UPDATE: I brewed this a little over a month ago and bottled it this past weekend. When I racked the beer from primary to secondary, I was pleasantly surprised. Without any of the additions, it was a great stock porter. Last sunday we bottled and like others have said, it is spicy, but in a...

    Mash in cold garage?

You will be just fine... I mashed in my garage last weekend and it was about 10f. I think i lost about 2 degrees total. -preheat your MT -whatever you do, DO NOT OPEN THE LID UNTIL THE MAS IS COMPLETE!!! You will immediately lose heat once you pop the lid off. That cold air is just...

    Low OG after boil...

Lots of good advice on here so far but I think the above hit it right on. I just finished my first all grain batch last weekend. Being paranoid prior to the brewday I did some tests. The first of which included adding my strike water to my cooler mash tun and checking temps every ten minutes...I...

I know I know, there is one of these threads a week, but I just thought I would share briefly my 1 st all grain experience. But First I wanted to say thanks to everyone on here for all the help and encouragement. I could not have been any better prepared to make the leap to all grain!! So I...

Spice, Herb, or Vegetable Beer Cocoa Cayenne Porter

Shinglejohn- I am brewing this on Sunday. Just wondering about ferm temps. Do you typically ferment at the lower end ~64f of the Whitbread yeast? Excited to try this as one last dark beer before I move on to the hoppiness for the summer months.

    What does this mean?

What does it mean when a recipe says " or until conversion is complete"? I guess my questions is how to I measure that, or know when conversion is complete? Thanks!

ruined brew day - no extraction from mash

I believe Northern Brewer DOES NOT crush the grain in their kits. I have bought two kits from them and the first didnt realize the grain was uncrushed until I got home and started brewing. The second I asked them and they said no, so I crushed them at the store. They really need to be telling...

Spice, Herb, or Vegetable Beer Cocoa Cayenne Porter

I am contemplating doing this as my first all grain recipe, but I am having a bit of difficulty understanding the Mash schedule. Here is what I got out of it. Let me know if I am incorrect. Mash: 3.66 gal; Strike water temp: 164.4f to achieve a mash temp of 150f. Mash for 75min. Sparge...
