    Pick-Up Tube: No Vacuum?

So I have installed a ball valve/pick-up tube on my keggle and when I drain any liquid from it, the liquid stops draining at the ball valve level. I presume this means air is escaping somewhere and a vacuum is not being created, though I cannot detect any water leaks anywhere. Here are some...

    Shirron Plate Chiller + Gravity

I posted a thread in the Beginners section, but wasn't getting the feedback I wanted. Maybe my question wasn't properly written. I'm going to try again here in a much simpler fashion :) If my boil kettle's ball valve is 5" above my carboy, will the orientation of the plate chiller be...

    CFC or IC?

I just built the stand below. Originally, I had intended on using an immersion chiller, but now i'm toying with the idea of a counterflow chiller. My concern is gravity and available space between the spigot of my keggle and where the lip of my bucket/carboy will be. The stand will be on...

    Camping + Keg

I'm leaving for a camping trip early Friday morning and plan on bringing a corny keg. The outside temperature is going to be highs of 59 and lows of 27. Part of the drive will be dirt roads and possibly quite bumpy. A few questions I have: 1. Given the aforementioned temperatures, I'm tempted...

    Brew Stand Critique?

I'm by no means a woodworker, but I am planning on giving brew stand plans to a friend who can build one for me. Hoping to get some feedback on here from people with experience in building a brew stand. Does this look like a sound structure? Posts are 4x4, nearly everything else is 2x4. Plan to...

What Not to Do Rule #286

Do not remove the cap of your liquid yeast directly above your fermenter if you've had 3 Bigfoot Ales and 1 Ruination. You WILL drop the cap in. ...UGH!!

    Chocolate Porter

Can anyone recommend a tried and true Chocolate Porter recipe? Extract or Partial preferably. I'm heading to the LHBS in a bit.

    Yeast Starter?

I went to my LHBS today to pick up the ingredients for an extract batch of Yooper's Dead Guy Clone and also picked up a kit of Brewer's Best Imperial Pale Ale (supposedly an Arrogant Bastard Clone?). I've yet to brew a beer that called for a yeast starter. The Dead Guy Clone calls for one (I...

    3 Tier System

Has anyone considered using something like this as the stand for a 3 tier system? Inexpensive, but made of steel and each shelf is adjustable (removable?) and can hold up to 240 lbs. If you were to remove shelves 2 and 4 and stick 4 wheels on the bottom, you could be in pretty good shape.

    Derek from Canyon Lake, CA

Hey everyone. New to the board, new to brewing. The new hobby is quickly becoming an (expensive) obsession though! Not even a month in and nearly $1,000 in. And loving every penny :mug:

Another "Is my beer ruined?" post...

Brewed my 2nd batch of beer (an IPA) last Saturday (January 8th). Added oak chips (sanitized by steaming) per the recipe's instructions. OG 1.061 FG 1.020 After reading on these forums as well as many other places that leaving the beer in primary for 2 - 3 weeks and dry hopping in there...

    Upgraded my brew equipment today

So I upgraded my brewing equipment today. Before, I was brewing on an electric stove which couldn't get my wort boiling as rapidly as I'd like. I made 2 batches this way. Each time, I boiled all ingredients in approx. 1 gallon of water, then poured into my primary and topped off with cold water...
