Cider has odor and slight aftertaste of bread

I ferment in my furnace room which stays pretty consistent 72-74. Is that too warm for cider?

Cider has odor and slight aftertaste of bread

Yes, bread. Don't know how else to describe it. I just has a slight bread taste and smell. It doesn't have the usual crisp apple taste that I am used to.

Cider has odor and slight aftertaste of bread

My last few batches of cider have had a slight odor and aftertaste of bread. I've had trouble with getting them to clear also. I'm using store bought apple juice (pasteurized without preservatives), English cider yeast with corn sugar added. I always use pectic enzyme and yeast nutrient. I...

Latest batch of hard cider tastes and smells like Applesauce?

Didn't think about the pasteurization process. That's probably it. I forgot to add the pectic enzyme too, which I usually add to all my batches. I added a bit of strawberry flavoring and acid blend to it to cut down on the applesauce flavor. I think I'll go back to juice for the next batch...

Latest batch of hard cider tastes and smells like Applesauce?

This is about my 8th 5 gallon batch of hard cider I've completed. I always let them ferment all the way, then back sweeten with 1 can of concentrate to get some apple flavor back. With this one, I pitched in February and racked to a keg in Late May. I tapped it about 2 weeks ago and tasted it...

Help: Premix faucet, 40' of line and I still have nothing but foam!!!

Not really. I replaced all of the o-rings in the keg, and I still get quite a bit of foam. When the foam hits whiskey though, it knocks down pretty quickly, so I haven't bothered to try to figure out what the problem is. I have tried dialing down the pressure on the tap until it trickles out...

    Back-sweetening questions for cider keggers

I like it dry, so I usually only add one container of AJ concentrate. If it's too dry, I'll add another half, but that's the most I've ever added. With 1.5 containers, I'd compare it to Strongbow.

    Back-sweetening questions for cider keggers

I have only back sweetened with AJ concentrate. I want to experiment with backsweetening with a little bit of pear or strawberry concentrate next. We'll see how that goes. I have kegged 6 batches so far without killing the yeast with some sort of additive. Haven't had any ill effects yet...

    Kegging my Cider

You should be fine, and I think you're doing a few extra step that aren't needed. I've done 6 batches now without killing off the yeast. I leave in primary for about a month, then rack to secondary. Once it's clear in the secondary or aged to my liking, I rack to a keg and put it in the...

Help: Premix faucet, 40' of line and I still have nothing but foam!!!

A warm line was part of the problem. After sitting overnight, there is less foam, but it's still bad. Maybe I'll try smaller diameter line and see what happens. I'm also thinking about swapping out the o-rings in my dip tube. I got the tap from here...

Help: Premix faucet, 40' of line and I still have nothing but foam!!!

I have three taps on my kegerater. 2 for beer and one for soda. I have the beer taps on one regulator at 11psi. The soda tap is on a second regulator pressurized to 30psi. The fridge is a consistent 37 deg (Johnson Controls Thermostat). I first tried serving the soda at 30psi with 40 feet...

How can I add strawberry flavor to my cider?

I have a batch of cider that I just transferred into secondary. I really want to add some strawberry to add some additional flavor. Can I just chop up some strawberries into the secondary and let them sit? What about bacteria or yeast that might be on the strawberries? Also, how much...

    Backsweeteneing Apfelwein w/ concentrate

I've done this twice now without adding anything to stop fermentation and it works fine. I let it sit in primary for about 6 weeks, then rack to secondary or straight to keg and let it sit in the fridge for a few more weeks. Then I add about 1.5 to 2 apple juice concentrate containers and...

How long is it safe to leave in primary?

I started a 5 gallon batch of apfelwein about 6 weeks ago and it's taking longer than expected to finish. There is still quite a bit of activity in the airlock, about 1 bubble every 5 seconds. I measured the SG last week and it was about 1.01 still. OG was 1.06. How long is it safe to leave...

Off taste on first pour of cola tap.

It has happened on every keg of cola I have made so far. I have filled up 4 kegs of Coke using 2 liter bottles, and just recently mixed up a batch of cola from Sodastream syrup and had the same results. I did suspect it was a result of the acidity of cola, but was hoping there was an...

Off taste on first pour of cola tap.

Long time listener, first time caller... I have a kegerator with 3 taps. One is commercial beer, one is hard cider that I ferment and keg, and the third is dedicated to cola. All three are Perlick stainless steel, and have beverage grade tubing that I purchased at my local home brew store...
