    Dedicated Keg for Cider Necessary?

Is it necessary to have a dedicated keg for kegging cider? I only have two kegs and I generally only make beer. I have a batch of cider my wife wants to keg instead of bottle, and I'm hesitant about hooking it up. Does the cider smell/taste linger in the keg like I've heard the soda can? I...

    First Starter Questions

Thanks all for the tips, seems simple enough. They sell the starter kit with either a 1000ml and 2000ml flask. I thought the 1000 ml was more common so I was planning on getting that (plus the DME would go further). Is this a mistake, should I be getting the 2000ml?

    First Starter Questions

So I want to begin to use starters, and had a couple questions. I'm going to buy a starter kit from nothernbrewer which will come with a 1000 ml flask and 1 pound of DME. 1) how many batches will the one pound of DME last? (or, how much do I add to make the starter?) 2) I am only at the...

Beer Machine extract kits for starter?

These actually are the beer mix kits for the beer machine. So looking at the mix it says ingredients are "powerdered dry malted barley extract, hop extract and brewers yeast" (the yeast is in a packet inside the bag). It seems like I might be ok to use it for a starter, but honestly it...

Beer Machine extract kits for starter?

I have several Beer Machine mixes left over from before I "really" got into brewing. These mixes are pre-hopped and dry, and make 2.5 gallons (just add water! :) ) Since they don't even make a full 5 gallons I don't even want to bother with using them (I have around 5 kits and no two match)...

    Carbonation question

Just wanted to update in case others run into the same problem and come across this thread. The beer did indeed eventually carbonate to a normal level after several more weeks. It tasted great! I did shake it up a bit and move it to a slightly warmer location, but it could have easily just...

    Carbonation question

Well I tried another bottle at the three week mark and unfortunately it is the same...slight sound when I open the bottle but no head. I have a second batch that has been in the bottles for a week now...hoping this has just been a fluke. The only thing that I did that seemed potentially wrong...

    Carbonation question

Well I checked again at the 13 day mark and there is still very little carbonation and no head when pouring down the center of the glass. I would say there was a small bit more carbonation then last time, and there is a small psst when opening the bottle, but still pretty flat. Should I expect...

    Carbonation question

Its the english brown ale brewers best kit, with white labs english ale yeast. I'll probably sample it again after it has sat for a few more days, and I'll put it in the fridge overnight before I do.

    Carbonation question

Thanks, I'll move it to a slightly warmer location. Brewno, thats exactly what my experience was as far as the carbonation goes, aggressive pour and "trying to be carbonated." It's encouraging to hear that everything worked out well.

    Carbonation question

Hi, I've just sampled my first batch after a week in the bottles. I know it is early I was just tasting it because I want to see how it develops over time. There was barely any carbonation, and no head whatsoever. Is this normal after a week in the bottles? I was under the impression...

    Question about Secondary Fermentation

I've done brewing with just a primary, and I want to add the secondary step mainly to get more flexibility on when I bottle. I already have another fermenter. My question is, if you're placing it in secondary for say 2-3 weeks, is there a concern that the yeast will settle out? How do you...
