    First time conical questions

I just got a 14 gallon conical from SsBrewtech, and I've got a couple pretty basic questions. 1. How long do you wait to dump the trub? I'm assuming wait like an hour, dump, then pitch the yeast? 2. How long should I wait to pull the yeast catcher off the bottom? Should I wait until...

A couple shots from my last brew day

I was brewing a 6 gallon Vienna lager to build up yeast for all my Oktoberfest beers and realized I have no pictures of myself brewing. Just for the hell of it, I captured a few shots.

Foamy output like I've never seen

I'm getting a foamy output from one of my kegs like I've never seen before. It was force carbed over two weeks and is sitting around 40º. The first few pints from the keg poured normal, and then all of a sudden last night, it started having what appears to be a line of foam shooting out...

    Adding lactose sugar to keg

A while ago I brewed a stout with the intention of adding lactose once it was in the keg. I was originally planning to dissolve the lactose sugar in about a pint of water, boiling it for 15, then adding it to the keg. I just had the idea of pulling a pint or so of the stout from the keg and...

Missouri Complete 5.5/11 Gallon All-Grain System (St. Louis)

Up for sale is a complete all-grain homebrew system for brewing both 5.5 and 11 gallon batches. Why put together a whole brewery from scratch when you could buy a complete system that has worked great for dozens of batches? The system includes: -Wood brew stand ($20) -Penrose kettle...

    Recirculating counterflow chiller?

I just got a used MoreBeer sculpture, but before I start using it, I want to make a few upgrades. I've already ordered the pickup tube and false bottom for the boil kettle, but I haven't decided what I want to do about the chiller yet. I started with an immersion chiller and then switched to...

    Growler koozie with freezer pack?

Maybe I'm crazy, but I thought I remembered seeing a growler koozie that had a pocket for a gel pack that goes in the freezer at some point. I've been searching all over trying to figure out where I saw, but no luck so far. Has anyone ever seen something like this? If so, where did you see...

Brew Sculpture within 6 hours of St. Louis

I'm in the process putting together a list of everything I need for a brew sculpture, but before I go any further I thought I'd put this up here to see if anyone around here is looking to unload theirs. Ideally, I'd like to get a used MoreBeer Tippy-dump sculpture, but I'm open to a...

    Highest alcohol for reusing yeast?

I've always heard that you don't want to reuse yeast if it's from a beer that's over 7%. Now I'm starting to hear people say that if you pitched the proper amount, you can go up to around 8%. What's the highest alcohol percentage beer you've harvested from? I've got 11 gallons of an 8%...

    Different sized plastic dip tubes?

I got an incredible deal on a bunch of kegs from a guy last summer at $20 a piece (he even threw in one for free because the relief valve wasn't working). I just got ready to use three of them for the first time, and they all have plastic gas dip tubes that need to be replaced. Problem is...

Force carb or naturally carb a barleywine?

I'm getting ready to bottle a barleywine I brewed last summer and have been bulk aging in a keg ever since. My original plan was to force carbonate it and then bottle off the keg, but I'm starting to think about naturally carbing instead. Does beer age differently when it's naturally carbed...

    Can I save this freezer?

Short story long, I decided to get a chest freezer dedicated to lagering. Finally found one that was the right size on craigslist. I don't have a truck, my friend called his cousin who called his uncle. I had to be somewhere else when the guy would be home, so the two of them went to get it...

    First visible infection. Now what?

Just went downstairs to keg a few beers and saw this. I brewed this back in December, and as of two weeks ago when I checked on it, that wasn't there. I've never had an infection before so I have no idea what it is, how it happened, or if there's anything I can do to save the beer. What...

    Determining viability of yeast cake

Here's the deal, I brewed a 5 gallon batch of vienna lager back in december (12/15) as a starter for a 10 gallon batch of doppelbock. After I put it in my basement for its diacetyl rest (12/24), I sort of forgot about it. It's been sitting on the yeast the whole time. When I'm looking in...

2.5 month primary... do I need to add yeast to bottle?

I brewed a Smoked Porter back at the beginning of November with an out of town friend. He's coming in town again this weekend, so we're going to bottle it. It's 6.4%, and it's been in primary since 11/12/11. We used WY 1028. Do I need to add some fresh yeast to the bottling bucket or do...

    Daisy-chaining CO2 manifolds

Right now I've got a 5-way manifold from KegConnection, and I'd like to add an additional 2-way manifold on the end. I've read that you can do this, but I haven't found any instructions on what I actually need to do. Is it as simple as taking the little cap off the end of one and screwing...

Why am I getting so much condensation?

I've had my keeper since July. Originally, I used crappy lumber for the collar, had it just sitting on the freezer, and then had the lid attached to it. I had serious condensation issues which I attributed to the air leaks in the collar (they were bad). I rebuilt it a few months ago with good...

Extra Special Malt vs Special B

I have a bunch of Special B, but I've got a recipe that calls for Extra Special Malt. I've heard that ESM is Briess's answer to Special B so they're pretty much interchangeable. Am I good just using Special B, or is Extra Special Malt that much different?
