    recipe advice?

Thanks for the advice/suggestions. I'll have to see what the local homebrew store has in stock as far as yeast goes. Small town means i may have to compromise unless i want to order something online. 68F is probably about as low as i'd want to ferment. I just remembered that i have some wlp029...

    recipe advice?

Hey folks. I'm messing around with beersmith and my goal started out as making something along the lines of a maibock, but as an ale. I've looked at a few recipes and i'm pulling from a few different ones, and throwing in a little here and there to achieve the color i'm looking for based mostly...

single beer brewing anyone? carbonation volume question

Indeed, but for fruit juices and teas, this seems that it would be the most economical and easiest way to carbonate on a small scale without having to buy co2 tanks. I would imagine that even if pressure was high and temperature was low, there would still only be so much co2 that a liquid could...

single beer brewing anyone? carbonation volume question

Ok, the desire to carbonate fruit juices and teas came to mind first, which is what led me to a website that had purchasable instructions for a cheaply made carbonation system that uses baking soda and vinegar to produce the co2. But what the hay, why not single beers? Say the LHBS is down to...

    Brew Day: Christmas Ale 2008

Hey, i just stumbled upon this thread. Any more updates on this? I noticed where you said the cinnamon didn't come through and it made me wonder about the quality of the cinnamon. I do a bit of bread baking and i found that the cinnamon sold in bulk at the local health food store is much...

    Support for Bines

From what i understand, hops can get a bit heavy especially when covered with rain or dew. Are you tightening the rope with a come-along or by any means? I recently bought some coir rope and i'm giving my first go at hops growing and i'm about to build a trellis/fence combo (i'm actually...

    Any experienced trellis/fence builders?

Thank you both for your comments. Here in GA, redwood is a little harder to come by, but pine is everywhere. Pine is more desirable than the galvanized metal simply because it looks better to me. I'm thinking some treated pine buried 4 feet and sitting on top of a few inches of gravel to help...

    Any experienced trellis/fence builders?

I recently purchased some hops rhizomes and i am starting them off in pots. We have a raised bed that we use for vegetables in our back yard and the area gets good light. I'm about to put a fence around it with a perimeter close to 100 feet, 23 by 25. That will leave about 5 feet from the...

Foreign culture in fermented wort? Advice

Cool guys, thanks. I filtered it through a fine chinois strainer while racking and bottled it. Im sure that its just a case of the newby shakes. Instead of brewing a new batch to dump on the yeast cake, i figured i would give yeast washing a try so i read the nice pictoral guide on this...

Foreign culture in fermented wort? Advice

It didn't taste extremely off or anything. its been in there for 17 days. I was gonna leave it for a full 3 weeks but i got to get out of town so i wanted to go ahead and bottle.

Foreign culture in fermented wort? Advice

oh, also i was originally planning on using the yeast cake for a new batch. is it safe to say that that would be a bad idea? Or would following a yeast washing tutorial help me be a cheap ass while not contaminating a new batch?

Foreign culture in fermented wort? Advice

Ok, i'm not a paying member yet, but i have a link to photobucket. let me know if it doesnt work. http://s891.photobucket.com/albums/ac113/shlegminitism/?action=view&current=beer.jpg This is only my second batch, but i sanitized everything and tried to not breathe when working with it...

Wondering what best plan would be...

I've had an ale fermenting since the ninth of this month. To date, that would be 16 days. In two to three days, i will have the opportunity to either transfer it to a secondary or go ahead and bottle it, though i would prefer to have it in the primary for at least 3 to 4 weeks. Unfortunately...

Anyone ever use their grains for cooking breads or anything?

Its definitely compostable. Might take a while to break down and add to the soil without the heat of aerobic decomp but i may be wrong on that. The birds may run off with it if you turn your back to long.

Anyone ever use their grains for cooking breads or anything?

Nice. Thanks for all the suggestions. I will look into them. I wonder if spent grain would be as good as just crushing some fresh and mixing it in with the flour, maybe with some nuts or something. :rockin:

Anyone ever use their grains for cooking breads or anything?

Just curious since i popped a grain of carapils in my mouth to check for freshness when i realized the vacuum sealed back must have had a whole in it. Man thats some yummy grains. It seems like if ground up, it could be used to add wonderful flavor to bread. Any attempts to make anything...

Stovetop extract brewing with grains for flavor

I am about to start brewing an oktoberfest (or something similar) from lme and adding grains to it, though due to my not being able to lager it, i am using a wlp001 california ale yeast and will be fermenting toward the low end of its recommended temperature. I was going to go with the wlp029...
