Pitching cider onto WL 530 yeast cake

Hey all, So I brewed up an abbey pale ale (my first AG!) using WL 530 and I've heard some good things about fermenting cider with belgian yeast. I'm thinking about just pouring in 5 gallons of juice/cider and maybe some brown sugar on top of the cake. My real question is whether or not the...

Can't I just use a grain bag in a cooler?

I was thinking about moving to all grain brewing. After seeing a bunch of how-to's about converting a drink cooler to a mash-tun, I was wondering... Can't you just dump all your grain into a grain bag, put it in a cooler, add hot water to mash it, drain the wort, then sparge the grains...

Well, I forgot to brew a christmas ale. Can I spice up a quick English Mild?

Hey all, So I prepared extensively for Thanksgiving by brewing up a dunkelweizen (finishing up carbing as we speak). BUT I realized I hadn't given ANY thought to Christmas. Seeing as it's probably too late to brew a bigger beer, I had the idea of brewing up a spiced beer with a lower OG...

    Brooklyn Lager - hop choices?

So I was recently in Brooklyn a couple weeks ago and fittingly had a Brooklyn Lager. Wow! It was surprisingly hoppy and they tasted very "fresh" and "clean". The website says it contains Hallertauer Mittelfrueh, Vanguard and Cascade hops - would anyone be able to suggest the amounts and type...

    Schneider Weisse clone - extract

Hey guys, I was wondering if anyone had a clone for schneider weisse using extract. I recently had it in DC and I just LOVE the clove/apple taste that I got from it. Thanks, Chris

    Trappist Lager

I was thinking up some crazy thoughts the other day. There was a thread floating around that was basically a clone of miller light. What do you suspect the taste profile would be like if you substituted white labs trappist yeast for the normal lager yeast?

    Dunkelweizen FG problem

Hey guys, So a while back I had a problem with my dunkelweizen that I was brewing (didn't start fermenting for 5 days, finally noticed activity after). So, fermentation activity has ceased for the past 4 days or so. My OG was 1.054 and the reading I just took is 1.022. That said, I'm...

No bubbles for 3 days... should i take the lid off and check for krausen?

Hey all, I have plastic bucket fermenter ("Ale Pail") and I haven't seen any bubbles coming from the fermentation lock in 3 days. Would it be okay to take of the lid and check for any signs of fermentation?

    Spicing up EdWort's Apfelwein

Hey guys, So I was thinking about starting up some apfelwein - figuring it'd be good to have during the month of December. BUT! I wanted to add some holiday spice to it in a nod to the holiday season. I haven't dealt with spices in any brews before, so I was wondering if you guys would...

    Question about my dunkelweizen

Okay, so I pitched my yeast and have my primary fermenter down in the basement. That said, I have two questions: 1) The temperature on the strip thermometer on the side of the fermentor reads 72 degrees. Is that okay for a dunkelweizen? I've read that the temperature determines the amount of...

sprinkling yeast over wort - will my beer even brew now?

So... I think I might have made a mistake. After I poured my wort into the primary fermenter (the beginnings of a dunkelweizen, if you are interested) the instructions for my Brewer's Best kit instructed me to "sprinkle the yeast packet" into the wort. So, I did. But! I came on here and...
