Kegs and Carboys in 1 Fridge or Freezer?

Looking for a little insight as I brainstorm a new fridge or freezer setup. Here's the background: I'm thinking about switching over from bottles to kegs, and will obviously need a fridge or freezer to do that. I'm in an apartment and only have room to bring in a new appliance if I get rid of...

    Boiling Thermoplastic Tubing?

Would there be any issues with boiling thermoplastic tubing as a cleaning/sanitation process? It's rated to 275*F so I don't see why not, but maybe someone has some info that I'm not thinking of...

    Campden Tablets: Crushed vs. Dissolved

First time using campden tablets this weekend. I crushed up half a tablet for ~10 gal of room temp water. When I stirred it in I noticed it did not dissolve very well, plenty of white specks all over. Is that to be expected? Should I do something to help it dissolve better or is it effective...

    Inside vs. Outside Carboy Temps

I know there are a range of thoughts on this, so I'm just looking for some insight/discussion on how folk's approach this. I'm 10 days into my first fermentation in my new SOF chiller. I had been using ice in a water bath but wanted something more precise/controllable (and I needed a project)...

    Pre-boil gravity readings?

Is there any point to taking pre-boil gravity readings if I'm using BeerTools to calculate my efficiency? I have always taken one, but the software calculates efficiency based on OG. Should I even bother with it anymore?

    Thermostat/Thermistor Question - SOF Chiller

Question for anyone with a little electrical sense: I built a "Son of Fermentation" Chiller this afternoon (using this plan). I wanted to mount the thermostat on the outside and still measure wort temperature so I extended the thermistor based on this plan. I'm using a RiteTemp 6020...

Coy and Josh (BrewBrand Creative) Rock!

Just wanted to share my new logo that Coy and Josh designed. I highly recommend them to anyone looking for some logo/label work. If you're on the fence about getting in touch with them, I say go for it! They are professional but informal and a blast to work with. Here's the logo (obviously...

    BTP Boil Volume

I'm pretty sure this is a really stupid question, but I need to ask it anyway. When I'm setting up a recipe in BTP, I see a bigger volume going into the kettle than the numbers account for. For example, a "Brewing Classic Styles" recipe has a 7 gallon boil and a 6 gallon final volume...yet...

    BTP Final Volume Question

I've been watching Bobby M's videos on Beer Tools Pro and decided to calibrate my kettle and MLT for my brew today. It got me thinking about final volumes, so I'll ask anyone who may know: My kettle has a little over half a gallon of deadspace below the ball valve that I put in my BTP...

    Yeast Starter Overflow

Looking for some thoughts/advice... I had a bit of an overflow in my starter while at work today. I'd say the puddle was about a quarter to a third of a cup, maybe a bit less. I'm sure there was some yeast carried out with the foam. Not sure if it was a lot or a little. Its a 2.3L starter...

    Bottling Without Drying the Bottles

When I bottle, I clean the bottles and then soak them in starsan for a few minutes. Then I just dump the starsan out of all of them and fill/cap. Is there any disadvantage to this process as opposed to using a bottling tree to let them thoroughly dry?

    help with the math

Need a little help crunching the numbers here... I'm switching over from extract to all-grain, but I have one last extract kit sitting around that needs to be brewed. It's the Midwest Brewing Bourbon Barrel Ale. I have a shiny new 10-gallon kettle, so I want to try this one out as a full boil...

    Sanitizer in Starter

I was careless when shaking up my starter this morning and caused a little bit of diluted StarSan to backwash from the airlock into the starter wort (I'd estimate it was maybe half an ounce...about 1/4 of the volume of a 3-piece airlock). Can my yeasties live through this or will the sanitizer...

    Boil Time Question

I'm new to the forum and pretty new to brewing (getting ready to attempt my second batch). Forgive me in advance for asking what is probably a very dumb/simple question... I have a kit for a Sam Adams clone (chose it so I could compare it and get a sense of how I'm doing). The suggested...
