    Yeast Cake for Old Ale

I am going to be brewing an old ale OG-1.084, and want a yeast cake to have to dump the old ale onto. I was thinking of brewing a cream stout OG 1.054 first to help grow the yeast. Is that too big for a first beer to use the yeast cake??

To Dump or not to Dump

Sounds good. Yeah I've read those posts already Revvy, guess I am just looking for reassurance! Atleast it is a strong and hoppy IPA right! Yeah not sure how the fetus got in there, it is really gross looking. I was thinking of drying it and placing it in the keezer, so when someone...

To Dump or not to Dump

OK, weird thing happened. I was tranferring an IPA to a second keg. After transfer I was going to clean the keg the IPA was in. I looked inside to see how much sediment was on the bottom and I saw SOMETHING on the stem. It appears it was in the beer and as I transferred the beer it rode down...

    Big Krausen = Good Head?

How about the color of krausen and head color? I onticed a brown ale I made had a very brown and derker than most (for me) krausen, and the head is very similar in color. Maybe just a coincidence?

    Pitch on yeast cake

Grvities and hoppiness was what I was worried about. As far as using the correct amount, after washing yeast, how does one determine an amount of yeast sitting in a jar? Thanks for the input folks!

    Pitch on yeast cake

Yorkshire Square yeast was used for an IPA, if one was to do a cream ale would that be a good cake to pitch onto?

    Double batch-different OG's?

It was extract. We took the readings after adding water. I think the amounts were the same, roughly, it was right at 6 gallons and we both added right at 2 gallons water.

    Double batch-different OG's?

A buddy of mine and I brewed a double batch of IPA. We added water to carboys to top off. When we poured the wort in the carboys (mine is marked) we tried to be sure to have the same amount of wort in each. I poured the first 2.5 gallons into mine, then about the same into his, then I sloshed...

    Saving Yeast?

OK-great. Yeah right now I am storing in frdige with beer on top. I will purchase some glycerine and add that so I can freeze to help extend life and viability. If I have some yeast thats been in the fridge for about two weeks do you think there is enough viable yeast to go ahead and add...

    Saving Yeast?

I am taking the yeast starter and decant most of the liquid, then I shake it and slosh it and pitch most and pour some of that into the vial. So I have yeast slurry with some liquid. Should I only pour in yeast slurry? And can I freeze any of this yeast slurry and/or liquid with glycerine...

Read this before you buy from Kegkits.com

I ordered from keg kits and have had similar problems but to top it off my credit card info was stolen when I ordered from there and another place online. I am not saying it was keg kits but it left a bad taste and I WILL NOT order from there again.

    Saving Yeast?

New to the site, I have really enjoyed reading all the tips and suggestions here. I seem to always navigate to the fermentation and yeast section. I have read the posts on freezing yeast and washing yeast. Lately I have been making a yeast starter and while pitching, I pour about a half a...
