    Maximum grain with Partial Mash?

OK, to that end, is the amount of water in which you steep very important? I read on the forums that if you use a high volume boil, you'll get a lighter colored beer (using extract). So for my last brew I took this into account and steeped about 3 lbs in about 3 gallons of water.

    Maximum grain with Partial Mash?

Hi, I haven't posted on here in a long while, but countless searches have come up fruitless, so I thought I'd throw it out to the gallery. I just got a whole bunch of grain from AHS and I think I got too much for my next PM batch. 4lb 2 Row 10oz 40L 8oz CaraPils I was probably...

quick question: should I dry hop yet?

I'd give a listen to the podcast (http://www.thebrewingnetwork.com/membersarchive/bs_dryhop12-08-08.mp3). I think they bring it up about halfway in. They mention that you can usually tell because there will still be some krausen and even a little bit of bubbling, but that otherwise most has...

    Dry Hopping resource

Yeah I used WLP-001 liquid yeast. Seemed to handle the fermentation fine. It's been in primary now for 10 days. OG was something crazy high, like around 1.090 and it's now down to about 1.020. Sample draws so far definitely have that hop bite I was looking for. Waiting a few more days in primary...

quick question: should I dry hop yet?

I recently listened to a podcast with the brewmaster for Firestone Walker (Union Jack IPA is pure gold). He (and many pros apparently) actually start dry hopping when primary fermentation is at about 85% - 90%. I've personally never done it, but who's to argue with a brewmaster of his...

    Dry Hopping resource

Hey all, after asking my question I came across this great podcast that goes into great detail about dry hopping. http://www.thebrewingnetwork.com/membersarchive/bs_dryhop12-08-08.mp3 They talk about a lot of what people ask, eg: - Should I add hops in a bag or loose? - Which hops should I...

    Auto siphon and bottle filler

You know, I thought about getting a bottling bucket. Interestingly enough, the guys at my LHBS talked me out of it. Their reasoning was threefold: 1) The transfer will lead to a greater risk of oxidation 2) Adding another vessel to the process increases the risk of infection 3) Just...

    Auto siphon and bottle filler

Hello. In preparation for my second bottling, I thought I'd ask some questions that I couldn't find in the archives. I recently bottled my first batch using an auto siphon and bottle filler. They seem like nifty contraptions, but the instructions that came with them were pretty ambiguous. It...

    Dry Hopping resource

It's a Green Flash West Coast IPA clone. Hop schedule below: Amount Name Form Alpha IBU Boil Time ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 0.50 oz. Simcoe Pellet 11.90 24.5 90 min. 0.25 oz. Columbus Pellet 14.00 13.1 60 min. 0.25 oz. Simcoe Pellet...

    Dry Hopping resource

Is there a good resource out there that tells whether certain hops are good for dry hopping? I have 3oz of Columbus and 1oz of Horizon in my freezer. The latest batch that I'm fermenting is super-hopped already, but calls for some dry hopping. It would be nice if I could use these, but I'm...

    Not quite "rolling" boil

Yes it's stove top. If I reduce the boil size, I assume that means just starting with less water. I think it's important to note that I do partial mash with the grains and the instructions I've been following call for 3 gallons of water (more or less) to steep in. I don't add anymore water...

    Not quite "rolling" boil

This is what I was looking for. An easy, DIY solution. We'll see how my two brews come out that didn't quite "roll". From wort samples they seem not terrible, so I'm not worried. Next batch though, I'll give it a whirl.

    Not quite "rolling" boil

All good answers. Still the question remains: how to achieve the rolling boil? I had my gas burner turned up to "High". If I covered the pot it would boil over and dislodge the lid in a matter of a minute or two. But I've read that you don't want to cover the boil as harmful vapors can get...

    Not quite "rolling" boil

So I brewed my second batch this weekend and I think all went well. I did notice however, that I never really achieved a strong, rolling boil. I started out with a pretty good boil but then I added my LME and first hops and it just kinda subsided. The pot was obviously hot, and looking...

    Columbus & Centennial Hops

Not exactly what you're looking for, but check out the hop chart over at BYO. This proved immensely helpful on my last brew as I had to substitute a few hop varietals due to their being out of stock at the LHBS. http://***********/resources/hops

    When/how to use the malt?

When you say "by a bit", how much are we talking? 1 lb, more, less?

    When/how to use the malt?

Just so I understand you correctly, when you say "add it after cutting the fire", does that mean after the boil with hops? Or before the boil, after I remove the steeping bag but before I start to add most of the hops? And oh yeah! Mighty indeed. Pliny is hands down my favorite, but really...

    When/how to use the malt?

So my first batch of brew is now in secondary, comes in about 8%abv and tastes pretty darn good. Now I'm gearing up to head to the homebrew store this weekend, but before I go I wanted to run a couple questions by the community: I am going to be brewing the following recipe from extract...

    Thick layer of hops

I took the lid off of my currently-fermenting brew last night to check how things were going (and because I'm curious). I noticed there was a very thick layer of the whole-leaf hops I used in the boil. They appeared to be mixed in with the trub, but mostly totally covering the trub with a little...

    Viable dry hop technique?

I've read many a-post on here wondering how to dry hop, how to get the hops fully wet and submerged and began thinking. What if you put the hops in the secondary first, then poured the brew from the primary? I get the feeling most of the time, the brew is siphoned into the secondary and then the...
