    For the most part aquarium stones are not very durable with alot of handling. You might get bits of the stone crumbling off in your wort.

    Interesting to see this happen to other people as well. This happened to my first batch. It was true brew IPA. Tasted great after 3 weeks in the bottle.     If you used a 10 gal cooler for a 5 gal batch, would there be a significant increase in heat loss due to the excess head space?

    You wouldn't see any activity from rehydrating the yeast unless you proof it with a little sugar. That however is not recommended by the manufacturers.

    If you don't mind wasting more sugar. You can redo this experiment but instead of plain water, bring the SG of the water to something similar to beer. 1.01-1.02.

    cover the opening with aluminum foil. Put them in a cold oven, set oven to 340 F. Leave for an hour once oven hits 340. Turn off the oven and let the bottles cool slowly in the oven. With the foil, they should stay sanitized indefinitely.

    C02 is heavier than air so there will be a cushion but theres still a chance of oxidation. Personally i'd rather not risk it. Also, if you're taking the sample with a wine thief, you would be getting a sample from all the strata and it would get mixed when you put it in your hydro tube, so it...

    Actually i believe it can hurt. If the container is open you may oxygenate the beer if you stir it up.
