Questions about my christmas gift--need help

So I am getting good at doing the extract batches from my local homebrew supply store(5 gallon batches), and I received a thoughtful and very nice gift from the in-laws. It's a kit from mr beer that has 3 types of beer for 3 two gallon batches. As I have only been using my 5 gallon buckets, and...

Is a glass carboy a must?

I'm still in the buckets, but I'm mainly brewing from kits purchased at my local brew store. I already have enough bottled beer to last me well into 2010...

All grain questions, ready for the next step

Those replies are exactly why I became a member of this forum. I'm going to attempt a partial mash, as suggested by flyguy. Those mash tun links are pretty cool. On a side note to flyguy--I looked at your pics, I see you are also a fisherman--I live on the Oswego river, a tributary of Lake...

All grain questions, ready for the next step

I've made 3 batches so far from extracts and all of them turned out great. I'm drinking a beer from the initial kit that came from the shop, I just bottled an Amber ale, and I'm bottling a Blonde ale tomorrow. I don't want to complicate things too much, but it seems that there are lots more...

    Just bottled my second batch

I like your beer name SWMBO's Belgian blonde---I've got a blonde ale fermenting right now for my SWMBO, I'm calling it "Unhoppy Blonde"...should be ready to bottle in another week or so. I've got an empty fermenting bucket, so I need to come up with my next brew over the next few days. Thinking...

    Just bottled my second batch

No questions, no problems. The information from this website is incredible, and my significant others mom helped me do the bottling. My first batch was bottled last friday, and I'm waiting very impatiently to give it a tase. I think I want to get into kegging the batches--bottling is fun, and it...

Hello, My name is Doug, and I've lost it already and I'm on my second batch

My first batch labels are kind of lame, just something to know which beer it is--I have a few styles of bottles and was going to try and organize beers by bottle style, but labels made sense at the time. The amber ale that is fermenting has a great name and a work related title. It is most...

Hello, My name is Doug, and I've lost it already and I'm on my second batch

I just bottled my first batch, took the advice offered in a few posts and held off. Anyway, that was fun, and when I put the cap on my first bottle, I took pictures. I've got the second batch fermenting, and I'm about to fire up the stove for batch 3. I actually came up with a good name for...

Hello, My name is Doug, and I've lost it already and I'm on my second batch

I've got my bottles ready to go, and I'm filling them tomorrow. The activity in my airlock has ceased, but I'm giving it another 24 hours just to be sure. I printed some cheesy labels, but I'm not sure I want to go through with having to clean the bottles again.

Hello, My name is Doug, and I've lost it already and I'm on my second batch

That was a quick profile when I just found the forum. Not just listening to Phish, even though they are my current favorite live act. If I'm driving to work, it's usually Bad Religion or something else along those lines. I'm from the northeast, and was in college in the early 90's, so I really...

Hello, My name is Doug, and I've lost it already and I'm on my second batch

I also grew up in a tavern that my father owned. Had it been a tavern in a ski resort things would have been perfect.

Hello, My name is Doug, and I've lost it already and I'm on my second batch

Too late to walk away. I go to work and think about making beer. I sit in bed at night, and think about making beer. I boiled wort today, and thought about making labels for beer. Does this happen to anybody else?

Hello, My name is Doug, and I've lost it already and I'm on my second batch

I live in Oswego NY, and I'm about a week away from the birth of my first child. My main hobbies are hiking/climbing/skiing in the high peaks of the Adirondacks. My other half knew I was interested in homebrewing, and bought me a kit for my birthday to give me a hobby at home. I truly believe...

    first label

YOu could also come up with the label design you want, and email it to staples. I"m sure they can print them off for you pretty cheap. I don't know if anyone has done this, but I think I might see how much that costs for my first few batches.

    Silly new guy questions

She's good spirited about it all, she bought me my kit for the first batch. Any way around it, it's cheaper than my skiing and cycling habits...And I'm brewing up my first Amber Ale right now.

    Silly new guy questions

I'm using fermenting buckets that use an airlock(from a kit)--the bucket that I use is my primary? What is secondary that you guys refer to? Would that be the bottling bucket? Is the primary/secondary terminology for when I get into using carboys? Next question-- Priming sugar question. I am...

    Flat Tire Recipe Anyone??

I'm going to brew my second batch ever this week on tuesday. I am also looking to do an amber ale, but I don't want to clone fat tire, even though it is my girlfriends favorite beer. I am hitting my local brew shop tomorrow to pick the owners brain on what to go with for my recipe, even though I...

    Adding yeast to my batch

I ended up just sprinkling the dry yeast on top, and I think I added it while the wort was too warm. It was taking too long to cool down and I had to go to work. HOpefully all turns out well. I checked the activity in the airlock and it is going well for now. This forum is an incredible wealth...

    Adding yeast to my batch

Kit says to sprinkle the yeast on top when it cools to 75f, do I stir that in or just sprinkle it on top? Maybe a silly question, but I don't know if it makes a difference or not.

About to brew my 1st batch

My malt is boiling right now. Everything is sterile(I hope) and it's going better than planned. Even my dog is excited, I can't wait to taste this sweet goodness.
