Mold in the blow-off tank... I'm freakin' out!

The blowoff's only purpose is to give intense amounts of krausen a place to go. Once the most active fermentation is done (less than a week), just put an airlock on instead. That way, you also have part of the cleanup done.

San Diego International Beer Festival @ the San Diego Fair

Hey all, Anybody else going to this? Which time slot are you thinking about attending (11-3 or 4-8)? Looking forward to hanging out with some other local homebrewers from the forums and other.

    First Brew w pics

Very nice on your first brew! Welcome to the addiction. I started in August of last year, and now, about $1,200 later, I find myself with a full AG setup and a ferm chamber that can ferment 50 gallons (10 batches) at once. You've got some catching up to do :)

Rewiring mechanical A/C: Keep compressor on

Just for anybody who may be reading this, doing what I did works perfectly. Take a piece of cardboard, affix it to separate the air conditioned air outflow port from the mesh and coils at roughly a 45^ angle, then direct a fan up to the underside of that cardboard (which will then feed all air...

Rewiring mechanical A/C: Keep compressor on

I think I'm talking to myself here. Hah. Just checked on it again, and even though it was frosted up a bit (not as much as before), the ambient temp was at 50^F. Wow! That cardboard ramp sure improved the air flow down to my fermenting wort! So now I upped the high limit threshhold a bit to...

Rewiring mechanical A/C: Keep compressor on

Still getting frost on the coils and mesh. Here's a couple pics of my AC unit. Since I'm not super familiar with the airflow, I'm wondering if the cold air coming out the top gap is being immediately circulated back around and sucked into the coils and mesh. Could that be causing the frost so...

Rewiring mechanical A/C: Keep compressor on

Alright, so I removed the front cover of the A/C unit to maximize airflow to the coils. Then I filled every crack and gap with GreatStuff, so it should be pretty air tight inside. Then I placed 3 DampRid buckets inside the chamber (up on the top shelf, two on ground level). Let's see how this...

Rewiring mechanical A/C: Keep compressor on

Yeah, my coils are frosting up too. This'll be a fun one figuring out what to do. The A/C unit sits on top of the chamber, which has a door cut out, hinged up ward, and resting on the front edge of the A/C unit. The sides of course have insulation board. So, there's not much room to work with...

Rewiring mechanical A/C: Keep compressor on

Damn, just checked it (1 hour after it being on). The temp is down to 62^F, which is good, and means it would have cut off soon, but the device to the left of the compressor was freezing over. I imagine the coils were doing similarly. That's the one drawback from living next to the...

Rewiring mechanical A/C: Keep compressor on

I actually did try bending it out to the back side of the unit first...yeah...didn't work :) BUT, for my last A/C that did have wire leads on the bulb, I extended it which did work.

Rewiring mechanical A/C: Keep compressor on

That worked great, thanks! I simply slid the two hot connector plugs together, plugged the sucker in, and the compressor came on and stayed on. I don't think this will be much of a freezing over issue as long as I don't set my ext temp controller to lower than 62^F and make sure all gaps and...

Rewiring mechanical A/C: Keep compressor on

Here's a couple images of my A/C unit. The metal lead that goes to the front coils connects directly into the box that has two hot leads entering it from the top.

Rewiring mechanical A/C: Keep compressor on

I'm a little confused, or maybe I'm not. Hah. You're saying to just take the hot leads from the A/C temp sensor (thereby cutting the sensor itself off, which is a long metal one) and essentially attach (tape would work) them to the compressor housing? Or do you mean to take the hot leads and...

Rewiring mechanical A/C: Keep compressor on

Hey all, Bought a replacement A/C unit yesterday that's mechanical. It gets my ferm chamber down to 64^F, but no lower. My fermometer is reading 70^F temps this morning, so I want to rewire the thing to keep the compressor on (doesn't really make too much difference in terms of A/C health, as...

    Brewtunes

It depends. Sometimes I like modern rock (no death metal), or if I'm more relaxed I like music like Michael Buble or any other pop jazz. I'll even listen to some classical like Bach, Mozart, or any of the other greats. But usually I listen to my Pandora station of Incubus, Nirvana, Bush, etc etc.

Ferm chamber: A/C unit keeps freezing over

Wow, very cool! I might do that if it gets to the point where I can justify the $300 for the CoolBot. For now I'll watch my fermometers and see how they go. I always give the wort an extra 2^F from what the fermometer says (ex: fermometer says 66, wort should be 68). Even with the compressor...

New A/C unit in ferm chamber, keeping at 64^F

Hey all, So, my last A/C unit on top of my ferm chamber started to freeze up every time, so I bought a new one today. It's a mechanical 5,000 BTU one, which seems to be working great, but the compressor kicks on and off frequently. It hasn't gone below 64^F ambient inside the ferm chamber all...

Ferm chamber: A/C unit keeps freezing over

Dang, just went in the garage and the compressor was off though the fan was on high. I wonder if this is controlled by a temp probe that I can lengthen to outside the chamber, or by an internal mechanism to keep the coils from freezing. Anybody with more knowledge on A/C units able to chime...

Ferm chamber: A/C unit keeps freezing over

Well, I went and bought a new one from Wal Mart: http://www.walmart.com/ip/GE-5-000-BTU-Mechanical-Window-Air-Conditioner-Cool-White/13803064?wmlspartner=GPA&sourceid=44444444440291357345 It's manual, so I don't need to rewire anything this time, which is quite nice. I've got it installed...
